Spanish Crackdown on Anonymous Fénix Hackers

Spanish Crackdown on Anonymous Fénix Hackers

Posted on February 24, 2026 By CWS

Spanish law enforcement has successfully detained four individuals affiliated with the Anonymous Fénix group, accused of orchestrating distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks. This development marks a significant step in the country’s ongoing efforts to clamp down on cybercrime.

Targeting Public and Government Entities

The arrested individuals allegedly targeted a range of websites, including those belonging to governmental, political, and public institutions. Their activities were notably heightened following the devastating floods in Valencia during October 2024, which resulted in widespread disruption and damage.

Previously, in May of the previous year, Spain’s Civil Guard apprehended two other individuals linked to the group, believed to be its administrator and moderator. The latest arrests further implicate the group in a series of cyberattacks aimed at undermining public entities.

Origins and Escalation of Activities

The Anonymous Fénix group, claiming association with the broader Anonymous hacktivist network, began its operations in April 2023. Initially focused on propaganda campaigns via platforms like X and Telegram, the group primarily targeted institutions in Spain and South America.

According to reports from Spanish authorities, the group escalated its activities from September 2024, recruiting volunteers to conduct targeted attacks. Their motivation was reportedly driven by dissatisfaction with public administration, particularly following natural disasters.

Seizure of Digital Assets and Related Arrests

In conjunction with the arrests, authorities have also seized the group’s digital assets, including its YouTube and X accounts, and have shut down its Telegram channel. These actions aim to dismantle the group’s online presence and prevent further malicious activities.

In a related crackdown earlier this year, authorities arrested an 18-year-old individual suspected of launching cyberattacks on over 40 organizations, such as NATO and the United Nations. This suspect allegedly leaked stolen data online while operating under various aliases and managing numerous cryptocurrency accounts.

The continued efforts by Spanish authorities highlight a broader commitment to combatting cybercrime, ensuring that those responsible for digital threats are brought to justice. As cyber threats evolve, law enforcement agencies worldwide remain vigilant, adapting strategies to effectively counter these challenges.
