Nick Andersen Steps Up as Acting CISA Director

Nick Andersen Steps Up as Acting CISA Director

Posted on March 2, 2026 By CWS

Nick Andersen has taken on the role of acting director at the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) in the United States. This transition follows his tenure as executive assistant director for cybersecurity at the agency.

Leadership Changes at CISA

Andersen steps into this position after Madhu Gottumukkala’s departure. Gottumukkala, who had been with CISA since May 2025 in the capacity of deputy director, is transitioning to a new role as director of strategic implementation at the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), which supervises CISA. His exit is reportedly linked to issues surrounding a failed polygraph test and the misuse of ChatGPT for uploading sensitive information.

Andersen’s Extensive Background

Nick Andersen brings a wealth of experience from both government and private sectors. He has previously been at the helm of Invictus, a firm focused on cyber and national security, and served as Chief Information Security Officer at Lumen Technologies’ public-sector division. His government service includes leadership roles at the Department of Energy, the White House, the Coast Guard, the Navy, and the State of Vermont.

CISA’s Leadership Landscape

The absence of a permanent director at CISA during the current administration continues. Sean Plankey was nominated for the position, having been involved in significant cyber roles at the Energy Department and the White House. Although his nomination was initially blocked, the White House renewed its support for him in January 2026.

Meanwhile, reports have surfaced about potential role changes for CISA’s CIO Bob Costello and acting chief human capital officer Kevin Diana, who might either assume new responsibilities within the DHS or opt to resign.
