Microsoft 365 North America Disruption Due to CDN Issue

Microsoft 365 North America Disruption Due to CDN Issue

Posted on March 6, 2026 By CWS

Microsoft is currently addressing a significant service disruption affecting its Microsoft 365 platform, causing widespread issues for users across North America. The disruption has been linked to configuration problems within the Content Delivery Network (CDN), a critical component of Microsoft’s global service infrastructure.

Service Disruption in North America

The incident, which became evident on March 6, 2026, is actively being investigated by Microsoft engineers. The issues first appeared when users across North America reported difficulties accessing various Microsoft 365 services, including the Admin Center. This has left IT administrators unable to perform essential tasks like user management and monitoring service health.

Microsoft has acknowledged these access challenges through its service health page, confirming that numerous users might be facing service availability issues. The investigation timeline reveals focused efforts on resolving these disruptions, with the first notice recorded at 8:51 PM IST on March 6.

CDN Configuration Identified as Root Cause

Microsoft’s engineering teams have pinpointed the Content Delivery Network (CDN) configurations as the likely cause behind these disruptions. The CDN plays a pivotal role in distributing static assets and accelerating content delivery across Microsoft’s extensive network. Any misconfiguration at this level can lead to comprehensive service outages, affecting a range of dependent applications.

Previous incidents have highlighted similar vulnerabilities, with significant outages in January and February 2026 due to North American infrastructure issues. These incidents disrupted major services such as Outlook, Defender, and Purview, emphasizing the critical nature of CDN stability.

Ongoing Investigation and User Guidance

Microsoft has yet to provide a conclusive resolution time as engineers continue to analyze telemetry data from affected services. Users are encouraged to monitor the Microsoft 365 Service Health Dashboard for real-time updates and to follow the status page for ongoing incident tracking. Organizations are also advised to prepare alternative administrative access strategies in case the Admin Center remains inaccessible.

With the legacy CDN domain for SharePoint, publiccdn.sharepointonline.com, slated for retirement by April 2026, there is an added urgency for users to update their internal dependencies to ensure continued service stability.

Stay informed about the latest developments by following Microsoft’s official communication channels. Organizations are encouraged to review their IT strategies to mitigate the impact of such outages in the future.
