Carl Froggett: Dual Role as CISO and CIO at Deep Instinct

Carl Froggett: Dual Role as CISO and CIO at Deep Instinct

Posted on June 23, 2026 By CWS

Carl Froggett holds the unique position of serving as both Chief Information Security Officer (CISO) and Chief Information Officer (CIO) at Deep Instinct, a company with fewer than 200 employees. This dual role highlights a growing trend where technology and security leadership can merge, though it is not feasible for every organization. Froggett points out the interdependent nature of the CISO and CIO roles, emphasizing that while the CIO focuses on technology strategy and infrastructure, the CISO ensures these elements are secure.

Advantages and Challenges of Combined Roles

Froggett explains that the synergy between the CISO and CIO roles can prevent conflicts that might arise when these responsibilities are separate. However, he warns that combining these roles can also lead to a loss of impartiality unless there is a culture of openness where team members are encouraged to voice concerns. His approach at Deep Instinct involves fostering an environment where his IT team is comfortable challenging his decisions, preventing tunnel vision and poor decision-making.

Froggett’s Path to Cybersecurity

Froggett’s career began in technology with a degree in Computer Science from Loughborough University. After gaining experience as a contract engineer, he joined Salomon Brothers, which led to a long tenure at Citigroup. Initially focusing on IT, his transition to cybersecurity occurred as he was tasked with addressing security issues in emerging communication technologies. This shift was timely, aligning with the industry’s move toward internet-based solutions and the rise of cybersecurity as a standalone discipline.

Leadership and Career Guidance

Despite not initially seeking leadership roles, Froggett found himself transitioning from an engineer to a manager responsible for a large team. He attributes his success to embracing opportunities and learning from challenges. He advises others to welcome opportunities, expand their networks, and grow through diverse experiences. Froggett emphasizes empathy as a key trait in leadership, viewing it as essential for bridging the gap between individual aspirations and organizational goals.

He encourages his team to speak up about mistakes, fostering a culture of transparency and learning. Froggett’s leadership philosophy centers on nurturing personal growth alongside professional development, which he believes benefits both the individual and the organization.

Current Cybersecurity Concerns

Froggett identifies artificial intelligence (AI) as a significant concern in today’s cybersecurity landscape. While acknowledging AI’s potential benefits in fields like medicine, he is wary of its misuse by malicious actors who utilize generative AI to conduct harmful activities. The challenge for cybersecurity professionals is to keep pace with rapid technological advancements and develop creative solutions to mitigate risks.

Froggett foresees AI’s impact on career opportunities, noting that it could reduce the need for certain entry-level positions while enhancing productivity. However, he remains optimistic that AI can serve as a tool for progress, much like previous technological innovations. He balances this optimism with caution, understanding the potential societal impacts of AI-driven changes.

Ultimately, Froggett’s journey reflects a commitment to integrating technology and cybersecurity for the benefit of businesses and society. His dual role at Deep Instinct and his insights into leadership and AI highlight the evolving landscape of cybersecurity and technology management.
