Uber has been penalized nearly $1 billion by Dutch authorities for utilizing automated systems to suspend driver accounts without human oversight. This decision by the Dutch Data Protection Authority underscores the ride-hailing company’s breach of European Union data privacy laws.
Violation of EU Privacy Laws
The Dutch Data Protection Authority announced a fine of 825 million euros, equivalent to $964 million, against Uber for contravening the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). These stringent EU regulations prohibit the use of fully automated systems for decision-making without adequate human intervention.
Alongside the hefty fine, the authority criticized Uber for not adequately informing drivers about the automatic decisions affecting their accounts. These infringements reportedly occurred between 2018 and 2022, as per the agency’s findings.

This recent penalty marks the fourth occasion Dutch regulators have fined Uber. The largest fine prior to this was issued in 2024, amounting to 290 million euros ($324 million), over allegations that Uber transferred European drivers’ personal data to the United States without proper safeguards.
