OpenAI has unveiled its latest AI model, GPT-6 Astra, heralding it as the most advanced and aligned model to date. This announcement comes shortly after the company confirmed that the model meets the ‘Critical’ threshold in cybersecurity readiness, as outlined in its Preparedness Framework. GPT-6 Astra is lauded for its exceptional performance across various domains, including computer use, software engineering, and professional services.
Unprecedented Performance in Cybersecurity
The GPT-6 Astra model excels in cybersecurity, achieving perfect scores in ExploitBench, a platform designed to test a model’s ability to convert software vulnerabilities into operational exploits. Astra’s 100% score starkly contrasts with the 78.5% achieved by its predecessor, GPT-5.6 Sol. The model is also adept at executing arbitrary code, surpassing previous iterations by utilizing vulnerabilities from recent months, including two zero-day exploits.
Despite its capabilities, OpenAI has restricted Astra’s use to secure code review and patching, intentionally blocking any requests to develop proof-of-concept exploits. This cautious approach aims to prevent misuse by malicious actors, balancing the tool’s dual-use nature.
Strategic Rollout and Future Plans
Currently, GPT-6 Astra is being deployed to selected organizations, with broader availability planned for ChatGPT Plus, Pro, Business, and Enterprise users. Access will also be provided through Microsoft Azure and AWS Bedrock. OpenAI plans to gradually lift some restrictions via its OpenAI Daybreak initiative, enhancing defensive applications like malware analysis and vulnerability validation.

Global Initiative for Enhanced Cyber Defense
In conjunction with Astra’s release, OpenAI has introduced the Daybreak for Frontline Defenders initiative, pledging $1 billion to bolster critical infrastructure sectors against cyber threats. This initiative offers subsidized model access, training, and technical support to essential service providers and organizations with limited security resources.
A pilot program with the U.S. Multi-State Information Sharing and Analysis Center is underway, equipping public sector and water system defenders with the necessary tools and training. OpenAI emphasizes its commitment to empowering defenders to preemptively address security vulnerabilities before they are exploited by attackers.
