Hackers Return 3M Stolen from Liquid Network

Hackers Return $263M Stolen from Liquid Network

Posted on September 8, 2026 By CWS

In a surprising turn of events, alleged ‘white-hat’ hackers have returned a substantial portion of the Bitcoin stolen from Liquid Network. Over the weekend, the hackers returned 3,400 Bitcoin, valued at approximately $262.6 million, following a significant security breach on the Bitcoin sidechain.

Details of the Liquid Network Breach

The security incident was made public by Blockstream, the developers of the Liquid Network, on Sunday. The network’s nodes were disabled, and all transactions were suspended to contain the breach. Exchanges were promptly informed, leading to a pause on LBTC deposits and withdrawals. Other Liquid assets, like USDT and DePix, remained unaffected by the breach.

The breach involved the theft of funds from Liquid’s federation wallet, which initially contained around 4,200 Bitcoin. Despite the scale of the theft, the exact method used by the hackers remains unclear. However, it is known that the funds were withdrawn utilizing the SideSwap Peg-out Authorization Key, which was not compromised during the incident.

Return of Funds and Ongoing Investigation

The hackers, who have claimed to be acting as ‘white-hats’, indicated their intention to return the stolen funds once Liquid addresses the vulnerability that allowed the breach. In a blockchain message, they urged Liquid to fix the bug, ensuring all nodes are patched before they safely return the remaining funds.

As of Monday, 3,400 Bitcoin has been returned to Liquid. However, approximately 598 Bitcoin, worth around $47 million, is still outstanding. Blockstream continues to liaise with the hackers to recover the remaining funds, according to former Blockstream executive Samson Mow.

Impact on Liquid Network and Future Precautions

Currently, the network remains paused while Blockstream and federation members work on additional security enhancements and resolve a chain split. This pause affects Liquid wallets and services, as efforts are made to ensure a secure restart of network operations.

The incident underscores the serious security challenges facing blockchain networks and highlights the importance of robust security measures. As the investigation continues, the focus remains on restoring trust and ensuring the security of digital assets in the future.

In a broader context, this incident is a reminder of the ongoing vulnerabilities within the cryptocurrency sphere, emphasizing the need for continued vigilance and improvements in security protocols.
