WhatsApp is innovating its privacy offerings by developing a feature known as Restricted Chat, aimed at enhancing user security by keeping specific conversations confined to the primary mobile device. This feature, once implemented, will prevent selected chats from syncing across additional devices such as desktops or secondary phones linked to the same account.
The Purpose of Restricted Chat
Currently identified in the Android beta version 2.26.36.5, this feature is still under development and not yet accessible to beta testers. WhatsApp has not announced a definitive public release date nor confirmed availability for stable Android, iOS, Web, or desktop versions. The Restricted Chat option seems to be an extension of existing Advanced Chat Privacy settings, offering more refined control without replacing current end-to-end encryption or Chat Lock capabilities.
The feature will be optional and can be applied selectively to sensitive conversations, allowing users to maintain privacy for specific chats while continuing to use linked devices for regular communication.
Functionality and Benefits
When activated, Restricted Chat ensures that chosen conversations remain on the primary device, excluding them from synchronization with any linked devices like WhatsApp Web or secondary phones. This design narrows the access to confidential discussions, ensuring that even if a user links other devices like laptops or tablets to their WhatsApp account, those devices will not receive the restricted chat content.
This feature is particularly significant in scenarios where linked devices could inadvertently expose messages, such as through an unattended browser session or a shared device. By restricting access from the start, WhatsApp aims to provide an additional layer of security.
Implications for Users
Restricted Chat is anticipated to maintain the protections offered by Advanced Chat Privacy, which was introduced in April 2025. These protections include preventing the export of chat history, disabling automatic media saving to a device’s gallery, and ensuring messages are not utilized with Meta AI features. Importantly, the system will notify users when Advanced Chat Privacy settings are altered, maintaining transparency.
This feature could be especially beneficial for professionals like journalists, executives, and activists handling sensitive information. It may also reduce exposure to unauthorized web clients that exploit linked-device access to read synchronized conversations.
While Restricted Chat offers significant privacy enhancements, it is not a catch-all solution against data leaks. Users are advised to remain vigilant about unrecognized linked devices while awaiting further announcements from WhatsApp regarding the feature’s rollout schedule.
