Combatting Fake AI Attacks in US Businesses: MSSP Strategies

Combatting Fake AI Attacks in US Businesses: MSSP Strategies

Posted on October 15, 2026 By CWS

Security experts are increasingly encountering fake AI attacks targeting US businesses, posing significant risks by spreading malware and compromising business accounts. According to ANY.RUN, 1,258 public sandbox analyses were linked to these fake AI campaigns between April and October 2026. These campaigns add operational pressure on Managed Security Service Providers (MSSPs), with US businesses being 16% of the targets.

Understanding Fake AI Attacks

Fake AI attacks exploit the trust in popular AI brands to deceive employees into executing harmful commands, installing compromised applications, or submitting credentials on fraudulent sites. Attackers use names like Claude, ChatGPT, GitHub Copilot, and Gemini to lure victims through sponsored search results, legitimate hosting services, and counterfeit download pages.

For instance, a campaign impersonating Claude involved a fake software installation page. Victims were tricked into executing a PowerShell command that initiated a malicious chain involving mshta.exe, leading to the deployment of harmful payloads. This tactic presents a detection challenge as it leverages legitimate Windows utilities, with the malicious actions only occurring after several execution stages.

Impact on MSSP Operations

The rising frequency of fake AI campaigns poses substantial challenges for MSSPs, particularly in monitoring, detection, and response processes. Attackers frequently change domains and tactics, complicating the detection of new threats. These campaigns necessitate more in-depth investigations, increasing analyst workloads and response times, which can strain SOC operations and affect SLA compliance.

ANY.RUN data highlights that recognizing similar attack patterns across various client environments is critical. MSSPs need to adapt their processes to efficiently handle these threats, reduce mean time to detect (MTTD) and respond (MTTR), and manage escalating investigation costs.

Enhancing Detection and Response

To address these challenges, MSSPs can leverage tools like ANY.RUN’s Interactive Sandbox, which allows analysts to replicate and analyze suspicious activities in a controlled environment. This helps in identifying genuine threats and reducing unnecessary escalations to senior analysts, enhancing Tier 1 efficiency.

Additionally, integrating ANY.RUN’s Threat Intelligence Feeds into existing security workflows provides MSSPs with real-time insights into malicious infrastructure, enabling earlier detection of emerging threats. By using unique indicators of compromise (IOCs), MSSPs can proactively defend against evolving threats and reduce dependency on manual investigations.

Overall, the combination of enhanced threat intelligence, behavioral analysis, and systematic reuse of findings can significantly strengthen MSSP operations. This approach not only improves detection rates and reduces investigation workloads but also helps MSSPs maintain consistent service quality while scaling their operations efficiently.

In conclusion, as fake AI campaigns continue to evolve, MSSPs must adopt a comprehensive strategy that combines early threat detection, efficient investigation, and effective threat hunting to protect their clients and maintain operational excellence.
