Critical GitLab Flaw Fixed: Prevents Unauthorized Code Execution

Critical GitLab Flaw Fixed: Prevents Unauthorized Code Execution

Posted on October 16, 2026 By CWS

GitLab has rolled out crucial updates to address a severe security vulnerability affecting its Community Edition (CE) and Enterprise Edition (EE). This flaw, identified as CVE-2026-97229, posed a risk of arbitrary code execution, potentially allowing unauthorized users to execute code on GitLab servers.

Understanding the Security Flaw

The vulnerability, designated with a CVSS score of 10.0, is rooted in an integer overflow issue. It was exploitable under certain conditions through a specially crafted regular expression in CI/CD configurations, due to inadequate regular expression validation. This flaw impacted all versions from 19.2 before 19.2.8, from 19.3 before 19.3.5, and from 19.4 before 19.4.2.

Patch Details and Additional Vulnerabilities

GitLab has released patches in versions 19.4.2, 19.3.5, and 19.2.8 to mitigate this critical flaw. In addition to CVE-2026-97229, three high-severity vulnerabilities were also addressed:

  • CVE-2026-92883: A cross-site scripting issue with a CVSS score of 8.7, allowing authenticated users to run arbitrary JavaScript in other users’ browser sessions via a crafted repository.
  • CVE-2026-16301: An improper authorization vulnerability with a CVSS score of 8.5, enabling users with Developer roles to execute CI/CD pipelines on protected branches.
  • CVE-2026-14814: A permissive regular expression flaw with a CVSS score of 8.2, which could lead to cache poisoning and unintentional execution of crafted content in CI/CD pipelines.

Recent Security Challenges

This disclosure follows the resolution of another critical vulnerability in the AI Gateway (CVE-2026-90970, CVSS score: 9.9), which could have allowed authenticated users to bypass security constraints and execute commands. Additionally, a recent high-severity flaw in GitLab CE and EE (CVE-2026-85706, CVSS score: 10.0) also attracted significant attention following its public announcement.

The rapid response to these vulnerabilities underscores the importance of timely updates and vigilant security practices in software development environments. By addressing these issues, GitLab enhances the security and reliability of its platforms, safeguarding user data and operations.

As organizations increasingly rely on automated CI/CD processes, maintaining robust security measures becomes crucial. GitLab’s proactive approach in patching these vulnerabilities illustrates its commitment to protecting its users from potential security threats.
