Ex-OpenAI Engineer Allegedly Planted Bug, Planned Saudi Escape

Ex-OpenAI Engineer Allegedly Planted Bug, Planned Saudi Escape

Posted on October 20, 2026 By CWS

A former engineer from OpenAI has been accused of secretly installing a listening device in a conference room to gather confidential company information. Federal prosecutors have disclosed that Abdulrahman Alfozan was on the verge of fleeing to Saudi Arabia when he was apprehended last week.

Allegations of Secret Recording

According to court documents, Alfozan’s wife and young son departed the United States shortly after his arrest. Their one-way tickets were reportedly financed by a Saudi military official. Prosecutors claim that Alfozan has substantial financial resources and support from a foreign entity, suggesting he has little reason to stay in the U.S. to face trial.

Despite arguments from Alfozan’s defense team about his strong ties to the United States, including an upcoming citizenship interview, a federal judge denied his release to home confinement. The judge questioned whether Saudi officials might compensate Alfozan for any financial loss if he fled.

Defense Arguments and Court Proceedings

Alfozan’s attorney emphasized his client’s long-term residency in the U.S. and significant personal investments as reasons for his client to remain in the country. Alfozan has lived in the U.S. for 15 years, attended prestigious institutions like MIT and UC Berkeley, and was nearing U.S. citizenship. His defense also highlighted that the family travel plans to Saudi Arabia were made well in advance of the alleged bugging incident.

Despite this, prosecutors countered that new flight arrangements were made post-arrest, casting doubt on the intent behind the original travel plans. The court remains skeptical about Alfozan’s intentions and his connections to a Saudi royal family member involved in an AI project.

Details of the Alleged Bugging

Prosecutors allege that Alfozan used sophisticated technology to conceal an audio recording device in a conference room at OpenAI’s headquarters. The device, hidden within toilet paper and connected to a TV USB port, was reportedly used to capture sensitive conversations among company executives and government officials. Security footage allegedly shows Alfozan placing and later inspecting the device.

The device was found on September 30, several days after its installation. OpenAI claims it was equipped with advanced encryption and audio capabilities, indicating an intent to evade detection. Alfozan is accused of planning to distribute additional devices throughout the office.

Implications and Future Outlook

Alfozan faces serious charges, including the use of electronic devices for unauthorized surveillance, which could result in a five-year prison term if convicted. The ongoing investigation continues to unravel the extent of his actions and potential motives. This case highlights significant security challenges for tech companies and raises questions about international influences on corporate espionage.
