Apache Tomcat Security Patches Address Critical Vulnerabilities

Apache Tomcat Security Patches Address Critical Vulnerabilities

Posted on October 21, 2026 By CWS

Apache Tomcat Addresses Security Concerns

Apache Tomcat has issued patches for eight security vulnerabilities that could potentially allow attackers to bypass authentication protocols, compromise data integrity, and disrupt server connections. The vulnerabilities were disclosed on October 20, 2026, after updates were made available for Tomcat versions 11.0.27, 10.1.61, and 9.0.123.

These vulnerabilities span multiple branches of Tomcat, meaning they do not uniformly affect all versions. Apache has categorized three of these issues as Important, with the remaining five classified as Low. Critical issues involve authentication mechanisms, HTTP/2 requests, and AJP response processes, which necessitate thorough configuration checks to assess potential risks.

Understanding the Key Vulnerabilities

One critical vulnerability, CVE-2026-101296, impacts the JNDIRealm when non-GSSAPI SASL mechanisms are in use. The flaw allows unauthorized authentication, affecting Tomcat 11.0.0-M1 through 11.0.26, 10.1.0-M1 through 10.1.60, and 9.0.0.M1 through 9.0.122. However, this is not a universal bypass for all Tomcat configurations.

Another significant security issue, CVE-2026-101356, arises from improper handling of internal objects during HTTP/2 processing. This can cause requests or responses to intermingle between users, affecting versions 11.0.22 through 11.0.26, 10.1.55 through 10.1.60, and 9.0.118 through 9.0.122.

Additional Vulnerabilities and Recommendations

The flaw CVE-2026-103119 impacts AJP response handling, leading to response body splits across connections. This can affect Tomcat versions 11.0.0-M25 through 11.0.26. Meanwhile, CVE-2026-88041 involves leakage of HTTP/2 trailer information due to incomplete cleanup processes.

Other issues include a TLS 1.3 connection failure (CVE-2026-93446), a redirect flaw in Jasper’s JSTL plugin (CVE-2026-74049), and FIPS activation failures (CVE-2026-74048). The last flaw, CVE-2026-80353, involves a race condition in Tomcat 9’s APR connector, affecting versions 9.0.47 through 9.0.122.

Importance of Timely Updates

It is crucial for administrators to promptly update their systems to the patched versions available for their specific Tomcat branches. Although there have been no reports of active exploitation, the risk of password bypass and cross-user data exposure necessitates immediate action.

Staying ahead of potential threats is essential, and updating defenses against new malware is highly recommended. Integrating Threat Intelligence Feeds with data from numerous Security Operation Centers can provide additional security insights.
