PHP Releases Urgent Fixes for Critical PHP2Shell Vulnerabilities

PHP Releases Urgent Fixes for Critical PHP2Shell Vulnerabilities

Posted on October 21, 2026 By CWS

In response to the emergence of two severe vulnerabilities known as PHP2Shell, PHP has rolled out emergency updates to mitigate potential risks. These vulnerabilities, affecting the PHP language itself, could allow unauthorized code execution on web servers. The updates, available in PHP versions 8.5.12, 8.4.27, 8.3.36, and 8.2.35, are deemed essential for complete server protection.

Understanding PHP2Shell and Its Impact

The PHP2Shell vulnerabilities reside in the PHP runtime environment, making websites vulnerable even if their own code is secure. This risk is particularly acute for servers utilizing Apache’s mod_php, where the exploit can execute before any application code is processed. Rated at 9.2 on the CVSS v4.0 scale, these vulnerabilities have been catalogued as CVE-2026-109618 and CVE-2026-109619.

Discovered by researchers from Wiz, Calif, and OpenAI, these flaws affect nearly all PHP versions dating back to PHP 5.4. The vulnerabilities were officially acknowledged by PHP on October 21, following a premature leak of details on October 20.

Who Is at Risk?

All PHP installations that handle web requests, including PHP-FPM, Apache mod_php, php-cgi, FrankenPHP, and LiteSpeed, are susceptible to exploitation. The security advisory specifically highlights mod_php due to the ease with which an unauthenticated exploit can occur without triggering application code.

While PHP-FPM functions differently, shutting down workers when requests fail early, it remains vulnerable. Attackers can potentially access memory from PHP worker processes, risking exposure of sensitive data such as passwords and API keys.

Recommendations for Mitigation

Admins are urged to promptly update the PHP runtime handling web requests and restart associated services like Apache and PHP-FPM. This update is critical, as patching applications like WordPress or Laravel does not address the underlying PHP vulnerabilities.

For those unable to update immediately, interim measures include adjusting memory and session settings. However, these are not foolproof solutions, and complete security is only achieved by applying the patch.

Current Threat Landscape

Even before the patch’s release, Cloudflare reported attempts to exploit these vulnerabilities. Despite no confirmed successful breaches, organizations have taken precautionary measures, including service shutdowns, to prevent potential attacks.

In conclusion, the PHP2Shell vulnerabilities underscore the importance of timely updates and diligent security practices. As PHP continues to be a fundamental component of web development, staying informed and proactive in applying security patches is crucial for maintaining server integrity.
