Discord Opens Public Server Messages to Google Search

Discord Opens Public Server Messages to Google Search

Posted on October 28, 2026 By CWS

Discord is set to enhance the discoverability of public server discussions by allowing selected messages to be indexed by Google and other search engines. This move, announced on October 27, will begin on November 16, 2026, and aims to make community-generated content more accessible to a broader audience.

Implementation of Discoverable Server Changes

The rollout will start with the creation of Server Web Pages and summaries of discussions. Initially, these will appear on November 16, with individual messages being indexed from mid-December. This phased introduction provides users and moderators with time to adjust privacy settings before messages become searchable online.

Discord’s initiative focuses on improving accessibility to valuable information shared within gaming guides, support discussions, and community forums, which are often overlooked by those outside the platform.

Criteria for Message Indexing

This update is specific to Discoverable Servers, which are open to all users without the need for an invitation. Servers must meet certain criteria, including having over 1,000 members, being active for at least eight weeks, and complying with activity and safety standards. Discord reports that over 63,000 servers currently meet these criteria.

Each Discoverable Server will automatically have a Server Web Page starting November 16. If moderators have not created one, Discord will generate a default page using the server’s profile. Automated summaries of channel discussions will also be available from this date.

Privacy and User Control

To prevent messages from appearing in search results, users can adjust their privacy settings. By navigating to User Settings > Data & Privacy, they can disable the option to display message content from Discoverable channels on web pages. This setting is account-wide and can be managed via the desktop app or browser.

The opt-out feature is enabled by default in most regions, but disabled by default in the EU/EEA, UK, Canada, Brazil, Australia, and South Korea. For teen accounts, the feature remains inactive. Importantly, disabling the option only affects future messages; previously sent messages must be manually deleted to prevent their appearance online.

Impact on Security and Community Management

These changes are part of a planned feature rollout rather than a response to a security breach. However, they highlight the importance of privacy awareness, particularly for channels discussing sensitive information. Moderators can control participation through Server Settings > Web Presence, allowing them to exclude specific channels or disable participation altogether.

As public channels gain search visibility, users and communities must remain vigilant against potential security risks. The introduction of AI-accelerated cyber threats further underscores the need for robust security measures in managing online communities.
