European Supermarkets Face Cyberattacks on Refrigeration Systems

European Supermarkets Face Cyberattacks on Refrigeration Systems

Posted on November 3, 2026 By CWS

Cybercriminals have once again targeted supermarkets across Europe, compromising refrigeration systems and causing significant disruptions. The latest wave of attacks impacted stores in Belgium, Sweden, Estonia, and several other countries, as confirmed on November 2. Hackers altered refrigeration controls, forcing some stores to discard perishable goods.

Widespread Impact Across Europe

Supermarkets in Belgium, Luxembourg, Sweden, and other regions reported the tampering of their refrigeration units. In Belgium, attackers activated the defrost mode, causing fridges to heat instead of cool, according to Stephan Moelans of Sabcobel. Similar incidents were noted in Sweden, where ICA stores faced severe temperature hikes in their cooling units.

Estonia’s Selver supermarket also experienced a breach, but the situation was quickly resolved without product loss. Danfoss, a Danish company providing refrigeration technology, acknowledged the involvement of its systems in these incidents, reminiscent of earlier attacks on French supermarkets.

Companies’ Responses and Security Measures

Different retailers and refrigeration contractors are employing various strategies to mitigate the impact of these cyberattacks. For instance, Musgrave’s SuperValu stores in Ireland temporarily removed chilled products from shelves. Meanwhile, Belgium’s Delhaize chain labeled the incident as an ‘IT issue’ and limited its food offerings temporarily.

Several companies affected by these attacks have been upgrading their security protocols. Danfoss advised customers to disconnect outdated models from the internet, while CERT-FR issued alerts on securing refrigeration controllers from potential threats.

Investigation and Prevention

The origins of these cyberattacks remain unknown, with investigations underway by cybersecurity agencies across Europe. Belgium’s federal prosecutor’s office has launched a criminal inquiry, while Sweden’s National Cybersecurity Centre continues to coordinate with other European countries to share information and strategies.

Experts emphasize the importance of robust cybersecurity measures, including secure connections and regular updates, to prevent such breaches. Danfoss and other suppliers are working closely with their clients to implement necessary fixes and enhance system defenses.

As investigations continue, affected companies are urged to review their security infrastructures and adopt recommended practices to safeguard their operations against future threats.
