Free Tool Released to Combat PHP and Node.js Vulnerabilities

Free Tool Released to Combat PHP and Node.js Vulnerabilities

Posted on November 7, 2026 By CWS

Insignary, a leading name in open-source security based in Toronto, has introduced a complimentary tool named insignary-chk. This innovative solution assists organizations in identifying PHP2Shell and Node2Shell vulnerabilities that threaten PHP and Node.js environments. As of November 6th, 2026, this tool is available to aid in the detection of these critical exposures, which have become a significant concern for Linux server administrators.

Understanding the PHP2Shell and Node2Shell Threats

PHP2Shell vulnerabilities, identified as CVE-2026-109618 and CVE-2026-109619, pose a severe risk with a critical rating of 9.2 under CVSS v4.0. These vulnerabilities allow unauthorized remote code execution on servers handling PHP web requests. Affected systems include those deploying Apache mod_php, PHP-FPM, and other PHP-based frameworks. The PHP Project has issued patches for these vulnerabilities in recent updates, but older PHP versions remain unsupported, necessitating immediate attention to upgrade.

Node2Shell, designated as CVE-2026-111497, affects Google’s Brotli decompression library used by Node.js. This flaw can lead to application crashes, memory exposure, or unauthorized code execution through maliciously crafted data. Node.js has addressed this issue in its latest updates, yet unsupported older versions continue to pose security risks.

Features and Functionality of insignary-chk

The insignary-chk tool is a standalone, read-only application requiring no installation or registration. It identifies vulnerabilities without altering system configurations, providing users with the flexibility to verify and address security concerns. The tool also examines Brotli libraries outside Node.js, extending its utility across various platforms. Importantly, results are prioritized, guiding users to address the most pressing vulnerabilities first.

Additionally, insignary-chk works in tandem with Insignary’s Clarity product suite, offering comprehensive security analysis without needing access to source code. This integration allows users to confirm findings through binary analysis, enhancing the accuracy of vulnerability assessments.

Implications and Future Outlook

With the inclusion of PHP2Shell and Node2Shell in the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s Known Exploited Vulnerabilities catalog, the need for robust detection tools like insignary-chk becomes evident. This tool empowers organizations to swiftly identify and mitigate risks, ensuring the security of their systems. As cybersecurity threats evolve, tools like insignary-chk will be integral to maintaining comprehensive software security.

The availability of insignary-chk as a free download reflects Insignary’s commitment to enhancing global cybersecurity resilience. Organizations worldwide can leverage this tool to fortify their defenses against critical vulnerabilities in PHP and Node.js environments.
