Microsoft Data Center Outage Affects Windows 11 Updates

Microsoft Data Center Outage Affects Windows 11 Updates

Posted on February 8, 2026 By CWS

Service Disruptions Impact Thousands of Users

A major power outage at a Microsoft data center in West US caused widespread service disruptions on February 7, 2026. This incident primarily affected Windows 11 users, who faced difficulties accessing the Microsoft Store and completing Windows Updates.

Beginning early Saturday morning, users across various regions experienced significant service disruptions. The affected regions were primarily those dependent on Azure services hosted in the West US.

Cloud Infrastructure Vulnerabilities Exposed

The disruption commenced at around 08:00 UTC, underscoring vulnerabilities within centralized cloud infrastructure despite the application of robust redundancy protocols. Microsoft quickly identified the problem, confirming that a power outage at the data center was at the core of the issue.

In an official statement, Microsoft acknowledged that the outage affected customers’ ability to perform tasks such as downloading apps or fetching essential operating system updates. The company’s swift response included activating backup power systems to stabilize the situation.

Impact on Azure Storage and Enterprise Operations

While the immediate impact was felt by Windows 11 users, the root cause was a power loss affecting Azure storage clusters. These clusters are crucial to the content delivery networks supporting the Store and Update services.

The outage triggered a chain reaction that affected telemetry pipelines essential for IT administrators. The loss of power compromised the monitoring capabilities, leaving DevOps teams without real-time access to application health data for several hours.

Efforts Toward Service Recovery and Future Outlook

As of February 8, Microsoft reported progress in restoring service reliability. Most services have resumed, but users in the West US region may still encounter some delays as storage systems complete their recovery processes.

For users facing errors like 0x80070002 during Windows updates, Microsoft recommends patience. Affected customers are advised to retry operations later, while IT administrators should monitor the Azure Service Health dashboard for updates.
