Microsoft Enhances Teams for iOS and Android

Microsoft Enhances Teams for iOS and Android

Posted on March 20, 2026 By CWS

Microsoft has rolled out significant updates to the Microsoft Teams application, specifically targeting iOS and Android platforms. These enhancements, announced on March 18, 2026, include the introduction of the WebRTC Redirector Service, aimed at improving performance for users connecting through Azure Virtual Desktop and Windows 365.

Boosting Performance and Security

The updates are particularly beneficial for IT administrators and security teams overseeing distributed workforces. They address key performance challenges associated with virtualized mobile communications, all while ensuring stringent enterprise security standards are maintained. The core of these advancements lies in sophisticated media redirection capabilities, facilitated by the WebRTC Redirector Service.

Traditionally, audio and video streams in virtualized environments were handled within the remote session, leading to latency issues and increased bandwidth usage. This often resulted in suboptimal communication experiences. However, the new optimizations decentralize media processing, using the local hardware of iOS and Android devices to handle audio and video streams directly.

Improving Communication Quality

By offloading media processing to the local device, Microsoft significantly enhances real-time communication quality during secure calls and meetings. This approach not only minimizes the data load traveling through secure virtual tunnels but also ensures consistent media performance across different network conditions. Users experience stable connections even in environments with fluctuating network availability.

Organizations leveraging Azure Virtual Desktop or Windows 365 can now enjoy improved responsiveness without sacrificing strict data security controls. This localization of media processing is a critical step in maintaining a smooth user experience while optimizing data flow efficiency.

Optimizing Infrastructure and Resources

From an infrastructure standpoint, these Teams updates reduce the computational and networking demands on Azure and Windows 365 host servers. By delegating video encoding and decoding tasks to the user’s device, valuable server resources such as CPU and memory are conserved.

This shift allows administrators to enhance virtual machine densities more effectively, providing a smoother Teams experience for users. Following a successful public preview, these features are now stable and ready for full enterprise deployment. Organizations can implement these optimizations immediately, with the updated Teams app available for download on the Apple App Store and Google Play Store.

IT professionals are encouraged to review supported configurations to ensure a seamless integration into existing systems. Stay updated with our latest news by following us on Google News, LinkedIn, and X.
