Mississippi Clinics Close Amid Ransomware Disruption

Mississippi Clinics Close Amid Ransomware Disruption

Posted on February 23, 2026 By CWS

A ransomware incident has led to the shutdown of all clinics associated with the University of Mississippi Medical Center, one of the state’s largest healthcare networks. This disruption has forced the cancellation of elective procedures for two consecutive days as of Friday.

Extent and Impact of the Ransomware Attack

As university officials grapple with the aftermath, they have indicated that the closures might extend for several days. Their primary focus is on assessing the reach of the cyberattack, including any potential breaches of patient data, and restoring the systems that were proactively taken offline.

Patients like Richard Bell, who traveled hours for essential treatments such as chemotherapy, were met with disappointment as they found services unavailable. The university is prioritizing communication with patients needing urgent care, ensuring necessary treatments are rescheduled promptly.

Ongoing Recovery Efforts

While hospitals and emergency services remain operational, the attack has significantly impacted the medical center’s electronic health record systems. Health care providers have temporarily reverted to manual record-keeping methods, reminiscent of earlier practices.

Vice Chancellor LouAnn Woodward confirmed that investigators are actively determining if any private patient information was accessed. The university has received communication from the attackers, though specific demands have not been disclosed. Collaboration with the FBI is ongoing, with the primary goal of restoring system functionality to ensure patient care continuity.

Broader Context of Cyber Threats

This incident is part of a troubling trend of ransomware attacks targeting public institutions, including schools and government agencies. Such attacks have previously resulted in severe disruptions, such as the shutdown of emergency services and exposure of sensitive data.

The FBI, emphasizing the urgency of restoring healthcare services, has made system recovery its top priority. However, further details about the investigation remain undisclosed as efforts continue to mitigate the attack’s impact.

As similar incidents continue to rise, the need for strengthened cybersecurity measures across public and private sectors becomes increasingly evident. The University of Mississippi Medical Center’s experience underscores the critical importance of safeguarding sensitive information against evolving digital threats.
