A Russian national has admitted his role in a significant ransomware operation, pleading guilty in a US court. Evgenii Ptitsyn, 43, was apprehended in South Korea before his extradition to the United States, where he faced charges related to his involvement in the Phobos ransomware scheme.
Extradition and Legal Proceedings
The US Department of Justice revealed that Ptitsyn, who was extradited in November 2024, has confessed to conspiracy charges associated with wire fraud. This plea could result in a prison sentence of up to 20 years, with sentencing set for July 15. His arrest marks a vital step in international efforts to curb cybercrime.
Involvement in Phobos Ransomware
Authorities have linked Ptitsyn to the Phobos ransomware operation, active since at least November 2020.
