Global Outage Disrupts Microsoft Exchange Online Access

Global Outage Disrupts Microsoft Exchange Online Access

Posted on March 16, 2026 By CWS

Microsoft is currently addressing a widespread interruption affecting Exchange Online users, who are facing challenges in accessing their email accounts through various connection methods.

Service Disruption Details

The issue was first reported on the Microsoft 365 service health dashboard, leading to multiple updates throughout Monday, March 16, 2026. Initial reports surfaced earlier in the day, with Microsoft acknowledging the disruption at 4:26 PM IST. Follow-up updates at 4:53 PM and 7:49 PM IST revealed that technical teams are diligently working to determine the disruption’s root cause and restore full service.

Exchange Online, a key component of Microsoft’s cloud-based email and calendaring services, is utilized by millions of business clients globally. The incident affects users’ ability to connect via software like Microsoft Outlook, both desktop and mobile, as well as Outlook on the Web (OWA) and potentially third-party clients using protocols such as MAPI, IMAP, or EWS.

Impact on Users and Organizations

While the specific number of affected users and regions remains undisclosed, the disruption impacts a subset of Exchange Online customers. Organizations dependent on this service for routine communications, including email exchanges and calendar management, may experience sporadic or persistent connectivity issues during the disruption.

Microsoft has not yet provided precise details on the scope but indicates that not all access routes are equally impacted. This suggests variability in how users are affected depending on their method of connection.

Microsoft’s Efforts and Recommendations

Microsoft’s response includes continuous updates via the 365 service health portal. Users and IT administrators are encouraged to check the Service Health section for live updates. The company is committed to offering more information as the situation unfolds.

Administrators might consider guiding users towards alternative access methods, such as switching to Outlook on the Web if desktop clients are disrupted. This approach could help mitigate the impact while the issue persists.

IT administrators are advised to monitor the Microsoft 365 admin center for the latest incident updates, assess which connection methods are specifically affected in their environment, and communicate these findings to users to minimize support requests. Additionally, documenting the scope of the impact may be necessary for compliance and service level agreement (SLA) considerations.

While the root cause remains under investigation, Microsoft has not linked the disruption to any recent infrastructure changes or updates. More technical insights are expected in future announcements.
