Apple has taken a significant step in enhancing device security by launching a new update mechanism designed to deliver faster protections across its platforms. Announced on Tuesday, this feature, known as Background Security Improvements, introduces a streamlined process for applying security patches.
This innovative feature initially comes with a series of WebKit patches but is versatile enough to support other platform components. According to Apple, Background Security Improvements aim to provide additional layers of security between regular software updates.
Understanding Background Security Improvements
Background Security Improvements are intended to deliver essential, lightweight security patches for components such as Safari, WebKit, and various system libraries. Apple emphasizes the importance of these ongoing, smaller updates in maintaining robust security.
Currently, this feature is enabled in iOS 26.1, iPadOS 26.1, and macOS 26.1. Apple plans to extend support to future platform versions, although it notes that compatibility issues may necessitate temporary removal of the feature, which would then be refined in subsequent updates.
How to Manage Security Updates
Users can control Background Security Improvements settings through the Privacy and Security menu. To ensure devices receive these updates, the ‘Automatically Install’ option should be activated. If this option is disabled, devices will only receive the improvements during standard security updates.
Apple outlines that if a user chooses to remove an applied Background Security Improvement, the device will revert to the standard software version, such as iOS 26.3, without the additional security improvements.
Addressing Security Vulnerabilities
The first set of security protections under this new system addresses CVE-2026-20643, a cross-origin bug in WebKit. This vulnerability, which could be exploited through malicious web content, was mitigated by enhancing input validation within the Navigation API.
The update has been made available as iOS 26.3.1 (a), iPadOS 26.3.1 (a), macOS 26.3.1 (a), and macOS 26.3.2 (a), marking a proactive approach by Apple to address potential exploits swiftly.
