Dutch Police Crack Down on NFC Relay Fraud Scheme

Dutch Police Crack Down on NFC Relay Fraud Scheme

Posted on October 26, 2026 By CWS

In a significant breakthrough, Dutch law enforcement apprehended two suspects linked to an NFC relay fraud scheme that defrauded victims of over $400,000. This operation represents a sophisticated evolution in financial crimes, targeting unsuspecting bank customers through advanced tactics.

Details of the Fraudulent Scheme

The perpetrators orchestrated a series of deceptive phone calls, employing AI-generated voices to mimic bank representatives. These calls falsely alerted potential victims to supposed suspicious activities on their bank accounts, prompting them to engage further by pressing a button.

Once the victims were engaged, a suspect impersonated a bank employee, misleading them into installing an application on their phones. This application, when used to scan the victim’s debit card, extracted data from the NFC chip, essential for contactless payments, and transmitted it to accomplices ready to withdraw funds from ATMs.

Impact and Arrests

The fraud scheme impacted 170 account holders, resulting in a theft of approximately €380,000. Victims spanned various age groups, highlighting the widespread vulnerability to such scams. On October 6, Dutch authorities arrested a 23-year-old suspect from Vaassen, believed to have developed the technical infrastructure, and a 25-year-old from Ede, who allegedly coordinated the fraudulent activities.

In addition to the arrests, law enforcement dismantled the operational capabilities of the suspects by seizing their servers, phones, and laptops. These actions underscore the seriousness of the crime and the commitment to curtail such cyber threats.

Ongoing Investigations and Broader Implications

Both suspects remain in custody as investigations continue to uncover the full extent of their operations. This case serves as a reminder of the growing sophistication of cybercriminals and the pressing need for enhanced security measures in digital transactions.

The incident adds to a series of recent cybersecurity challenges, including disruptions in phishing markets and ransomware attacks. It highlights the ongoing battle between law enforcement and cybercriminals, emphasizing the need for robust preventive strategies to protect financial data from similar threats in the future.

Authorities urge the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious communication, ensuring personal banking information is safeguarded against such fraudulent schemes.
