Massachusetts Hospital Faces Cyberattack, Diverts Ambulances

Massachusetts Hospital Faces Cyberattack, Diverts Ambulances

Posted on April 8, 2026 By CWS

Signature Healthcare in Brockton, Massachusetts, has been forced to redirect ambulances following a significant disruption caused by a cyberattack. The attack affected Brockton Hospital, a 200-bed facility, and its associated Signature Medical Group, which employs over 150 physicians across 15 locations.

Immediate Response to Cybersecurity Breach

The healthcare provider reported a cybersecurity incident on Monday. While inpatient care and walk-in emergency services remain operational, ambulance services were still being redirected as of Tuesday. Signature Healthcare quickly activated its incident response plan upon discovering unusual network activity, transitioning to downtime procedures to maintain high-quality patient care and safety.

Although surgeries and medical procedures were unaffected, chemotherapy infusion services were canceled, and patients at Signature Medical Group and urgent care locations were advised of potential delays. Some retail pharmacies were closed on Monday but reopened on Tuesday for consultations, though they were unable to dispense prescriptions.

Uncertainty Surrounding Attack’s Nature

Signature Healthcare has not confirmed whether the attack involved ransomware, and the attackers’ motives remain unknown. Typically, ransomware groups wait for negotiations to break down before naming victims on their websites to pressure them into paying a ransom. Despite this, no such group has claimed responsibility for this attack so far.

In recent years, many healthcare institutions globally have experienced similar disruptive cyberattacks. These incidents have sometimes resulted in data breaches affecting hundreds of thousands to millions of individuals and have even been linked to patient deaths in the US, Germany, and the UK.

Global Trends in Healthcare Cybersecurity

The increasing frequency of cyberattacks on healthcare facilities highlights a critical issue in the sector’s cybersecurity preparedness. As institutions continue to digitize their operations, they must also bolster their defenses against potential threats to protect patient data and ensure uninterrupted medical services.

Healthcare organizations are urged to enhance their cybersecurity measures to prevent such attacks, which can have severe consequences for both patient safety and data integrity. The industry must remain vigilant and proactive in addressing these threats to safeguard their operations and the individuals they serve.

As investigations continue, the impact of the cyberattack on Signature Healthcare underscores the need for robust security protocols and the importance of preparedness in the face of evolving cyber threats.
