Apple Aims to Fix iPhone Bug Removing Czech Character

Apple Aims to Fix iPhone Bug Removing Czech Character

Posted on April 18, 2026 By CWS

Apple is actively working to resolve a persistent iOS 26 bug that has rendered some iPhones inaccessible for users. This issue, detailed in a report by The Register, involves a missing Czech keyboard character essential for unlocking devices with custom alphanumeric passcodes.

Understanding the iPhone Lockout Issue

The problem became widely known when Connor Byrne, a 21-year-old university student, shared his experience on Reddit. Byrne chose not to use a typical PIN, opting instead for a complex passcode incorporating unique characters to enhance security. Unfortunately, this choice led to an unexpected predicament.

Byrne’s passcode included the caron or háček (ˇ) symbol from the Czech keyboard. When Apple launched iOS 26 in September 2025, this character was accidentally omitted from the lock screen keyboard, resulting in users being unable to access their devices.

Apple’s Response and User Implications

In response to the situation, Apple’s engineering team is developing a software update to restore the missing character. Despite a prompt response within nine days of the issue being publicized, the prolonged lockout has eroded user trust. Byrne, for example, plans to switch to an Android device, citing dissatisfaction with Apple’s quality assurance and favoring different camera technology.

Apple has yet to provide a public timeline for the fix. Meanwhile, affected users face the difficult choice of performing a factory reset, which would erase all locally stored data unless backed up.

Preventative Measures and Recommendations

To prevent similar issues, users are advised to regularly back up their data using iCloud or physical storage. This ensures that a factory reset does not result in data loss. Additionally, when setting custom passcodes, users should avoid relying on characters not universally available on all keyboard layouts.

It is also advisable to exercise caution with major software updates. As demonstrated in this case, unforeseen bugs can restrict device access, emphasizing the importance of monitoring updates and potential issues post-release.
