The problem became widely known when Connor Byrne, a 21-year-old university student, shared his experience on Reddit. Byrne chose not to use a typical PIN, opting instead for a complex passcode incorporating unique characters to enhance security. Unfortunately, this choice led to an unexpected predicament.
Byrne’s passcode included the caron or háček (ˇ) symbol from the Czech keyboard. When Apple launched iOS 26 in September 2025, this character was accidentally omitted from the lock screen keyboard, resulting in users being unable to access their devices.

In response to the situation, Apple’s engineering team is developing a software update to restore the missing character. Despite a prompt response within nine days of the issue being publicized, the prolonged lockout has eroded user trust.
