Data Breach at Richmond Radiology Impacts 266,000

Data Breach at Richmond Radiology Impacts 266,000

Posted on May 25, 2026 By CWS

Radiology Associates of Richmond (RAR) has recently revealed a significant data breach that has compromised the protected health information of approximately 266,000 people. This breach highlights ongoing cybersecurity challenges in the healthcare sector.

Details of the Cyber Intrusion

According to RAR’s incident notice, the unauthorized access to their systems occurred around July 25, 2025. The organization has not specified when they discovered the breach, but they engaged external cybersecurity experts to help manage and investigate the incident’s breadth.

The organization’s thorough forensic investigation, concluded by April 6, 2026, determined that files containing sensitive health information were illicitly acquired. However, the exact timing of when the breach was detected remains undisclosed.

Impacted Individuals and Notifications

RAR began notifying affected individuals on May 21. According to a report filed with the Maine Attorney General, 266,183 individuals will receive letters informing them of the potential data compromise. The information potentially at risk includes names, Social Security numbers, and more.

The redacted letters and incident notice submitted to authorities indicate that the breach may have also involved government-issued IDs, financial data, and medical insurance details, as noted by a listing on the Texas Attorney General’s website.

Response and Recovery Measures

In response to the breach, RAR has provided impacted individuals with guidelines on safeguarding their information. Those whose Social Security numbers were exposed have been offered complimentary credit monitoring services.

Previously, in July 2025, RAR alerted the US Department of Health and Human Services about another breach that affected 1.4 million individuals in April 2024. This incident underscores the persistent threat of cyberattacks on healthcare providers.

As the healthcare industry continues to face cyber threats, it remains crucial for organizations to enhance their data protection strategies and ensure patient information is secure.
