Philip Martin has assumed the role of Chief Information Security Officer (CISO) at Uber, marking a new chapter in his distinguished career.
Transition from Coinbase to Uber
Previously, Martin held the position of Chief Security Officer at Coinbase starting in April 2016. There, he was instrumental in shaping a robust security framework, overseeing a global team exceeding 250 individuals. His responsibilities spanned cybersecurity, Trust & Safety, physical security, technology governance, risk and compliance, and ensuring business resilience for both consumer and enterprise operations.
His tenure at Coinbase was marked by a commitment to protecting digital assets and ensuring the safety of the exchange’s operations amid growing cyber threats.
Extensive Experience in Security and Intelligence
Before his tenure at Coinbase, Martin made significant contributions at Palantir Technologies, where he established and managed the Incident Response and Security Engineering teams. Additionally, his work at Amazon’s A9 involved developing virtual infrastructure, further honing his technical expertise.
Martin’s career also includes a decade-long service as a counterintelligence agent and Arabic linguist with the U.S. Army. His roles, both in the United States and abroad, were pivotal in tactical and strategic intelligence operations.
Vision for Security at Uber
Expressing his enthusiasm for the new role, Martin highlighted the unique challenges at Uber. “What drew me here is simple: very few companies are responsible for real people moving through the real world at Uber’s scale, every minute of every day,” he stated in a LinkedIn post. Martin emphasized that security at Uber goes beyond data protection to include safeguarding trips, riders, drivers, and couriers.
His appointment comes at a crucial time as Uber continues to expand globally, necessitating robust security protocols to protect its vast network of users and operations.
