WhatsApp has officially revealed a new feature aimed at safeguarding user privacy by introducing usernames. This significant update, announced on June 29, 2026, allows WhatsApp’s vast user base of over three billion people to interact without sharing phone numbers directly. The rollout of username reservations begins today, with a full release expected later this year.
Enhancing User Privacy with Usernames
The newly introduced usernames are designed to facilitate connections on the platform without the need for phone number disclosure. Users can now create and reserve unique usernames, a move that WhatsApp emphasizes is primarily a privacy enhancement rather than a social media feature. Unlike other platforms, there is no directory of usernames, and users must know the exact username to initiate contact.
WhatsApp is also introducing a username generator to assist users in selecting unique identifiers. Additionally, users can opt for a username key, adding an extra layer of security by requiring both the username and key to establish initial contact.
Maintaining Control Over Contacts
According to a Meta spokesperson, the username key feature empowers users with greater control over who can reach them. This dual-layer approach ensures that both the username and a specific key are necessary for others to connect for the first time. For enhanced security, users can reset their key to block unwanted contacts.
This feature is particularly beneficial for content creators, small businesses, and organizations aiming to maintain consistent digital identities across various platforms. They can opt to use their existing Instagram or Facebook usernames on WhatsApp, streamlining their online presence.
Future Outlook and Implementation
Once activated, other users will no longer have access to a user’s phone number. To reserve a username, users can navigate to Settings, then Account, followed by Username on the app. WhatsApp has stated that usernames will be introduced gradually and users will receive notifications when the feature becomes available in their region.
This development follows more than two years after Signal implemented a similar feature to conceal phone numbers. As WhatsApp advances its privacy measures, this username introduction marks a substantial step in protecting user information and maintaining privacy.
