India Suspends WhatsApp Usernames Over Security Issues

India Suspends WhatsApp Usernames Over Security Issues

Posted on July 1, 2026 By CWS

The Indian government has intervened to temporarily halt the introduction of WhatsApp’s new ‘usernames’ feature, citing significant security concerns. The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) has formally requested WhatsApp LLC, a Meta-owned company, to justify this feature’s implementation and has ordered that it not be launched in India until thorough consultations are completed.

Government’s Formal Notice to WhatsApp

In an official communication addressed to WhatsApp’s Chief Compliance Officer for India, the Ministry responded to Meta’s announcement on June 29, 2026, about the phased global introduction of usernames. This new feature allows users to set unique identifiers, enabling communication without disclosing phone numbers.

The government has demanded a comprehensive explanation from WhatsApp, accompanied by supporting documents, within three days of receiving the notice. The platform is prohibited from activating the feature for Indian users until the government’s apprehensions are adequately addressed.

Security Risks and Potential for Fraud

Authorities are particularly concerned that the introduction of usernames, which obscure phone numbers, could lead to a rise in online fraud, phishing, and identity-related scams. The use of a ‘username key’ as a supplementary safety measure has been flagged as insufficient by officials.

A Department of Telecommunications representative highlighted concerns that criminals might exploit the feature by registering foreign numbers, adopting misleading usernames, and conducting untraceable fraudulent activities—challenges previously mitigated by the visibility of phone numbers starting with the Indian country code, +91.

WhatsApp’s Obligation and Future Outlook

WhatsApp is mandated to respond within the stipulated timeframe, providing documentation that addresses the government’s security concerns. Failure to comply could result in further action under the Information Technology Act, IT Rules, and other relevant laws.

As the username feature rollout continues in other regions, Indian users will remain excluded until the government is satisfied with the security measures in place. This development underscores the Indian government’s priority on safeguarding digital security and combating cybercrime.

In conclusion, the outcome of this consultation process will determine the future of WhatsApp’s usernames in India, emphasizing the need for robust security protocols to protect users from digital threats.
