Revival of Bugtraq: Original Cybersecurity Forum Returns

Revival of Bugtraq: Original Cybersecurity Forum Returns

Posted on August 8, 2026 By CWS

In an exciting development for the cybersecurity community, the original Bugtraq mailing list has been relaunched. This announcement was made by cybersecurity expert Jonathan Brossard, also known in professional circles as endrazine, during DEF CON 34 held in Las Vegas. The revival marks a significant moment for a platform first established in 1993, which has long served as a vital forum for the discussion of vulnerabilities and security techniques.

The Legacy of Bugtraq

Bugtraq’s history stretches back over two decades, making it one of the longest-standing resources in cybersecurity. With more than 120,000 references in databases like NVD and CVE, the platform, along with its associated site securityfocus.com, has provided indispensable information to security teams worldwide. It remains an essential technical reference for approximately one-third of catalogued vulnerabilities.

In today’s digital age, where fleeting social media posts and restricted access to information can hinder knowledge sharing, Bugtraq offers an invaluable service. It provides a free, open platform for security researchers to share and archive their work, ensuring that valuable insights are preserved for future reference.

A Community-Driven Platform

Bugtraq operates as a community service, accessible to all without any barriers such as paywalls or commercial interests. According to Brossard, the platform’s success is driven by its users. “We are providing the platform. The community decides what it becomes,” he stated, emphasizing the list’s role as a neutral ground for sharing information.

The relaunch has been welcomed by key figures in the cybersecurity world, including DEF CON founder Jeff Moss, who expressed his support by stating that Bugtraq could serve as a neutral space for discussing security findings.

Looking Forward

Subscriptions and archives of Bugtraq can be accessed through their website, offering a wealth of information to both seasoned professionals and newcomers to the field. The platform’s relaunch is a testament to the dedication of past moderators and contributors who have shaped the landscape of information security.

As Bugtraq re-establishes itself, the call is out for experienced individuals interested in moderating and contributing to the mailing list. This initiative invites those with a passion for cybersecurity to play a role in its continued success and influence.

Founded in 1993, Bugtraq remains a cornerstone of cybersecurity, fostering open dialogue and collaboration among security researchers. The platform is now independently operated, continuing its legacy as a primary channel for security advisories and original research.
