Weekly Cybersecurity Recap: VMware, macOS, Windows Threats

Weekly Cybersecurity Recap: VMware, macOS, Windows Threats

Posted on August 17, 2026 By CWS

This week in cybersecurity was marked by a series of significant threats, highlighting vulnerabilities in major systems like VMware, macOS, and Windows. These incidents underscore the persistent risk posed by both new and old vulnerabilities.

Critical VMware Flaw Exploited

A newly patched vulnerability in VMware vCenter, identified as CVE-2026-59310, has been actively exploited by a suspected China-linked threat actor. This severe directory traversal flaw, rated at a CVSS score of 9.8, allows attackers to execute arbitrary code. In some instances, the exploitation has resulted in the deployment of ransomware, though this is believed to be a diversion rather than the primary objective.

macOS Vulnerability Leads to Crypto Mining

A critical flaw in Apple macOS, CVE-2026-65400, has been leveraged to deploy cryptocurrency miners. This vulnerability affects the Screen Sharing component and allows unauthorized access to remote desktop features. The Netherlands National Cyber Security Center has reported widespread exploitation, leading to unauthorized root access and the installation of Monero miners on compromised systems.

Windows 0-Day Attacked by Lazarus Group

The notorious Lazarus Group from North Korea has been linked to the exploitation of a zero-day vulnerability in Microsoft Windows, specifically targeting the defense and aerospace sectors. The flaw, CVE-2026-68820, was addressed in Microsoft’s August 2026 Patch Tuesday update. This attack is part of a broader campaign involving sophisticated social engineering tactics to infiltrate sensitive networks.

GeoServer and Amnesia Stealer Developments

GeoServer has patched a critical SQL injection vulnerability that was actively exploited shortly after public disclosure. Meanwhile, a new macOS malware, Amnesia Stealer, has emerged, capable of hijacking web sessions and stealing sensitive information from various browsers.

Future Outlook and Recommendations

The rapid pace of these cybersecurity threats emphasizes the need for vigilant patch management and robust security measures. Organizations must prioritize addressing high-severity vulnerabilities and ensure exposed systems are secured. Continuous monitoring and proactive defense strategies remain crucial in mitigating the risk of data breaches and cyber attacks.
