Venezuelan Given Longest Sentence for ATM Fraud

Venezuelan Given Longest Sentence for ATM Fraud

Posted on August 24, 2026 By CWS

An unprecedented federal prison sentence has been handed down to a Venezuelan national for his involvement in a large-scale ATM fraud operation. The United States Justice Department revealed the sentencing on Friday, marking a significant development in cybercrime enforcement.

Record Sentence for Cyber Fraud

Juan Manuel Gouveia-Aguilera, aged 27, received a sentence of 96 months in prison. Following his release, he will be subject to 5 years of supervised release and must pay restitution for his crimes. This sentence follows Gouveia-Aguilera’s guilty plea to charges of bank fraud, bank burglary, and cyber-enabled fraud, confirmed by the DOJ.

The court attributed over $3.5 million in losses to Gouveia-Aguilera, making this the longest federal sentence imposed for ATM jackpotting activities. His case highlights the severity of penalties for cybercrimes involving financial institutions.

Related Arrests and Group Affiliations

The sentencing of Gouveia-Aguilera occurs shortly after two other Venezuelan nationals, Oddry Arnoldo Cabrera Torrealba and Carlos Javier Padron, received 78-month sentences for similar crimes. These individuals are among 119 people charged in Nebraska for their roles in ATM jackpotting schemes.

Authorities believe these suspects are linked to the Venezuelan terrorist group Tren de Aragua (TdA), underscoring the potential connections between cybercrime and organized crime networks.

Techniques and Broader Implications

ATM jackpotting involves physically tampering with ATMs and deploying malware to force the machines to dispense cash. This method has become increasingly prevalent, prompting warnings from the FBI earlier this year about a surge in such attacks across the United States.

The FBI reported around 1,900 ATM jackpotting incidents since 2020, with last year’s attacks resulting in over $20 million in losses. This trend emphasizes the growing threat of cyber-enabled financial crimes and the need for enhanced security measures.

As law enforcement continues to tackle such criminal activities, the lengthy sentences serve as a deterrent and a reminder of the importance of cybersecurity in protecting financial systems.
