Fraudulent Apps Exploit Google Play’s Early Access Program

Fraudulent Apps Exploit Google Play’s Early Access Program

Posted on September 10, 2026 By CWS

Fraudulent apps are manipulating Google Play’s Early Access program to bypass user reviews, according to recent findings. This program, designed to allow developers to collect feedback from early adopters, is being exploited by deceptive developers who avoid public scrutiny by operating without user ratings.

Exploitation of the Early Access Program

Google Play’s Early Access initiative is meant to facilitate app improvement by letting users test unreleased apps. However, the lack of inter-user communication features, like reviews or ratings, is being exploited by malicious actors. These developers use external advertising platforms to drive downloads of their apps, which often promise monetary rewards that never materialize.

Bitdefender reports that platforms like TikTok and Facebook are commonly used to advertise these apps, luring users with promises of PayPal payouts, cryptocurrency, gift cards, or casino jackpots. Once installed, the apps fail to deliver these promises and instead bombard users with continuous advertisements, which appears to be the primary revenue model for these deceptive apps.

The Rise of ‘Ghost Casinos’ and Trademark Abuse

One prevalent type of fraudulent app is the so-called ‘ghost casino’. These apps mimic casual games but are designed to circumvent gambling regulations. Often, misleading social media ads, featuring deepfakes of celebrities, entice users by offering free spins or rewards.

Trademark abuse is also rampant within this scheme. For example, apps may be uploaded under names like ‘Grand Theft Auto V (Early Access)’ to mislead users. They are indexed with these names and later renamed, redirecting users searching for legitimate information to these deceptive apps.

Implications and Future Concerns

This misuse of Google Play’s Early Access is not technically illegal, as no malware is deployed, but it is a significant abuse of a system intended to benefit honest developers. The fraudulent apps profit from ad sales while exploiting users’ devices on a large scale.

Bitdefender’s investigation indicates this tactic is widespread, with certain developers appearing multiple times and some apps accumulating thousands of installs. Although social media platforms are increasingly removing these ads, the deceptive practices continue to pose risks to unsuspecting users.

As these deceptive apps evolve, it remains crucial for users to remain vigilant and for platforms to enhance security measures. Understanding these exploitative tactics can help mitigate risks and protect the integrity of app marketplaces.
