Sony Enhances PS5 Security Amid Relapse Jailbreak Concerns

Sony Enhances PS5 Security Amid Relapse Jailbreak Concerns

Posted on October 2, 2026 By CWS

Sony has taken significant steps to bolster the security of its PlayStation 5 consoles with the introduction of a new firmware update. This move follows the emergence of the Relapse jailbreak, which has highlighted vulnerabilities in various older versions of the PS5 system software.

Impact of the Relapse Jailbreak

The Relapse exploit has raised concerns as it can affect PS5 and PS5 Pro consoles running firmware versions 7.00 through 13.60. This exploit enables the execution of unauthorized code on these devices, posing potential risks to users.

Prior to the public disclosure of Relapse, Sony had already released its firmware update version 14.00. The timing of this update is crucial as PS5 consoles updated to version 14.00 fall outside the range of the Relapse exploit’s compatibility.

Details of the PS5 Security Update

While Sony has not explicitly outlined fixes for Relapse on its consumer update page, it emphasizes the importance of installing security updates promptly. These updates are essential for maintaining the console’s integrity and ensuring optimal performance.

The Relapse jailbreak operates by exploiting vulnerabilities in the console’s browser and kernel, allowing for unauthorized access and the execution of unsigned applications. However, this is not a permanent solution, as the exploit must be re-executed after each system restart. Developers of the jailbreak caution users about potential risks, including system instability and data loss.

Recommendations for PS5 Users

For the average PS5 owner, updating to the latest firmware remains the most secure option. This not only safeguards the console with Sony’s latest security features but also enhances compatibility with games and services.

Sony advises against using update files from unofficial sources or modifying the console, as these actions can lead to system malfunctions and affect warranty status. The company provides various update methods, including automatic downloads and USB-based updates for systems that face download issues.

Firmware version 14.00 serves as a critical security boundary, shielding updated systems from the Relapse vulnerability. Since there is no official way to revert to earlier software versions, users who upgrade cannot easily return to a version susceptible to exploitation.

The release of the Relapse jailbreak underscores the importance of maintaining robust console firmware security. By addressing both browser and kernel vulnerabilities, Sony aims to uphold the integrity of its PlayStation ecosystem.
