Critical MarkLogic Vulnerabilities Threaten Server Security

Posted on October 16, 2026 By CWS

Introduction to MarkLogic Vulnerabilities

Progress Software has identified two critical vulnerabilities in its MarkLogic Server database, which could allow users with limited management privileges to gain full administrative control. These flaws are part of a broader disclosure involving 31 vulnerabilities, of which five are deemed critical. The necessary patches have been available since September 10, with users urged to upgrade to MarkLogic 11.3.7 or 12.1.0 to mitigate risks.

Understanding the Critical Flaws

The vulnerabilities expose significant security risks, with some scored as high as 9.9 on the CVSS scale. These flaws allow unauthorized administrative access through mechanisms like forest-management and manage-user-level privileges. Specifically, CVE-2026-85947 and CVE-2026-85948 enable attackers to create persistent admin accounts via forest management and XQuery injection, respectively. Other vulnerabilities require specific privileges but can lead to unauthorized actions or session compromises.

Outside researchers reported most of these vulnerabilities, highlighting the importance of community involvement in cybersecurity. The flaws underscore the necessity for organizations using MarkLogic to review their privilege assignments and audit roles to ensure security compliance.

Configuration-Dependent Vulnerabilities

Beyond the critical flaws, 24 additional vulnerabilities were rated high and two medium. These often depend on specific configurations, such as the use of SAML authentication, which can allow unauthorized assertions. Similarly, OAuth and password-based Kerberos configurations are vulnerable to misuse if not properly secured. Cloud-hosted environments are also at risk, with potential for unauthorized access to internal services and credentials.

Additional vulnerabilities affect various legacy components and diagnostic logging, potentially exposing sensitive information. Users are advised to consult upgrade notes carefully to understand the changes and prevent misconfigurations.

Implications of the Updates

The patches introduce several changes that could impact existing systems. For instance, certain API features and legacy components have been removed, and privilege requirements for specific functions have been updated. These changes may affect current workflows and require adjustment of automation tools.

Furthermore, some issues persist post-upgrade, such as maintaining old permissions on log files until they are rotated. The update does not explicitly confirm if it removes admin accounts created through certain vulnerabilities prior to the upgrade, leaving potential gaps in security.

Overall, these vulnerabilities highlight the ongoing challenges in maintaining secure database environments. Organizations must remain vigilant, promptly apply security updates, and continuously review their security configurations to protect against emerging threats.
