Linus Torvalds Utilizes AI for Linux Kernel Enhancements

Posted on October 16, 2026 By CWS

Linus Torvalds recently shared insights into how AI, specifically Claude Code, has been instrumental in writing Linux kernel patches and test programs. Under Torvalds’ guidance, Claude Code has contributed significantly to technical documentation and patch development.

AI’s Role in Kernel Development

The focus of this AI-assisted project is on enhancing the read performance of the page-cache within the Linux kernel. The use of AI tools like Claude Code illustrates their potential in core operating-system tasks, while also highlighting their current limitations.

Torvalds emphasized that Claude Code’s contributions were closely supervised, ensuring that the AI did not operate independently in maintaining the Linux kernel. The AI-assisted patches address a known issue where multiple threads perform small reads from a cached file, impacting performance.

Technical Solutions and Challenges

In the Linux kernel, each read operation typically updates a folio reference count. A folio represents a cluster of memory pages, and frequent updates can lead to processor contention over shared data. The new approach delays the reuse of page-cache memory until the end of an RCU grace period, allowing active readers to complete their tasks without disrupting memory allocation.

This method permits the cached data to be copied efficiently without constant folio reference updates. In scenarios where conditions such as missing cached data or user-buffer faults occur, the traditional read path is used to maintain stability.

Performance and Testing Outcomes

In a commit message dated October 10, Torvalds reported that testing on his Intel laptop with eight threads demonstrated a remarkable increase in read performance. The new method achieved 30–33 million 16-byte reads per second from a cached file, compared to the previous 9.9–10.4 million reads.

While these results are promising, they apply to specific benchmarks rather than the entire Linux system. Tests were conducted using ext4, with certain security features disabled. Memory pressure remains a concern, as delayed memory releases can lead to unaccounted memory waiting for reuse.

Further testing is needed, particularly in areas like KASAN, lockdep, and other architectures. The initial tests did not reveal any data corruption, but further validation is necessary to ensure robust performance and memory safety.

In conclusion, while AI tools like Claude Code offer innovative solutions for Linux development, comprehensive testing and review are essential to confirm their effectiveness in real-world applications.
