Google has introduced a feature on Android devices that automatically links phone numbers to every Google account signed in on a device. This default setting has raised privacy concerns among users who prefer to keep their personal, work, and secondary accounts distinct.
Automatic Number Verification
The automatic verification process extends to both existing Google accounts and any new accounts added later. This feature, known as Phone number verification, also applies to new numbers added to the device, potentially linking them to all signed-in accounts.
Users must manually disable this setting to prevent automatic phone number verification. Google’s support documentation states that this feature assists with account sign-in, recovery, emergency services, and communication features.
Privacy Concerns and User Impact
Despite Google stating that phone numbers are not made publicly visible, the automatic linking can create unwanted connections within Google’s systems, particularly for users who maintain separate accounts for different purposes. Customers are concerned about losing control over which accounts are linked to their phone numbers.
The feature is an account setting rather than evidence of a security breach. However, users have expressed concern about managing privacy across multiple accounts signed into a single device.
Managing Phone Number Verification
To manage phone number verification, users can navigate to Android Settings, select Google, then choose All services. Under Privacy & security, they can turn off the automatic verification feature. However, this action does not remove numbers already linked to accounts. Users must visit each account’s Personal info page to manually remove unwanted numbers.
Some users have reported that the setting re-enables itself, although this behavior remains unconfirmed by Android Authority. Users managing multiple accounts are advised to regularly review both device settings and account-stored phone numbers to maintain privacy.
As Google continues to evolve its account access strategies, including a shift towards passkeys, users are urged to stay updated with the latest security measures to protect their personal information.
