INTERPOL’s Major Cybercrime Crackdown Halts 10,909 Networks

INTERPOL’s Major Cybercrime Crackdown Halts 10,909 Networks

Posted on October 22, 2026 By CWS

INTERPOL has announced a significant breakthrough in its efforts to combat global cybercrime, revealing the disruption of 10,909 malicious networks and the recovery of over $105 million in illegal funds. This international operation resulted in the arrest of 1,462 suspects, demonstrating the extensive reach and effectiveness of coordinated law enforcement actions across borders.

Details of Operation Serengeti III

Codenamed Operation Serengeti III, this crackdown took place between June 29 and August 31, 2026, and involved law enforcement agencies from 21 countries. The operation’s scale highlights the sophistication of modern digital threats, with authorities identifying 65,929 victims who were targeted by cybercriminal networks. Financial investigations revealed that the criminal activities caused losses exceeding $385 million.

Participating countries included a diverse range from Africa, such as Angola, Nigeria, and South Africa, as well as the United States, reflecting the global nature of this effort. The collaborative operation underscores the importance of international partnerships in tackling cybercrime, which often transcends national boundaries.

Role of Private Sector Partnerships

Private sector entities played a crucial role in the operation, with Group-IB providing threat intelligence data on malicious resources used in cyber attacks targeting Africa. This intelligence was pivotal in identifying and dismantling cybercriminal infrastructures. Jacomo Piccolini from Team Cymru highlighted the significance of tracking and exposing these networks to prevent attacks proactively.

Instead of merely responding to incidents, the operation aimed to dismantle the infrastructure behind cybercriminal activities, enabling more effective defensive measures. The success of Operation Serengeti III exemplifies the power of integrating private sector intelligence with law enforcement operations.

Significant Arrests and Seizures

The operation led to several key arrests and actions, including the disruption of two transnational fraud rings in Uganda, involving 365 foreign nationals. Authorities dismantled illegal cryptocurrency mining centers in Angola, seizing equipment valued at over $1 million. In Nigeria, suspects were apprehended for their roles in phishing and investment fraud schemes, with significant funds laundered through cryptocurrencies.

This operation also highlighted the importance of tackling cybercrime at its roots, as demonstrated by the arrest of 30 individuals linked to a cybercrime group in the Republic of Congo. These actions reinforce the necessity of continued vigilance and international cooperation to mitigate the risks posed by increasingly sophisticated cyber threats.

As INTERPOL continues its efforts against cybercrime, the success of Operation Serengeti III serves as a reminder of the importance of global collaboration in protecting communities from digital harm and recovering assets from criminal enterprises.
