Cisco Patches Vulnerability in Firewall Software Exploited in the Wild

Cisco Patches Vulnerability in Firewall Software Exploited in the Wild

Posted on October 29, 2026 By CWS

Cisco has rolled out patches to address a critical vulnerability in its Secure Firewall Adaptive Security Appliance (ASA) and Secure Firewall Threat Defense (FTD) software. This flaw, actively exploited, underscores the importance of timely software updates in cybersecurity defense strategies.

Details of the Vulnerability

Identified as CVE-2026-76418, this vulnerability carries a high CVSS score of 8.6. It poses significant risks as it can be exploited remotely without authentication, leading to unexpected device restarts and potential service disruptions. The core of the issue lies in the logic errors within tunnel groups using secondary authentication.

Cisco explains that attackers can leverage this flaw by sending crafted requests during SSL VPN connections. Notably, an actual VPN login isn’t required to trigger the vulnerability. To be susceptible, a device must be running a vulnerable version of the software with an accessible SSL VPN login service and configured secondary authentication.

Company Response and Recommendations

The vulnerability was discovered during a Cisco Technical Assistance Center (TAC) support case, with credit given to Eric Fernald for its identification. Although specific details about the exploitation method and the attackers remain undisclosed, Cisco’s security team became aware of active exploitation in October.

No workarounds have been provided. However, users can mitigate risk by disabling the tunnel group list or removing secondary authentication. Nevertheless, Cisco warns that removing secondary authentication can compromise VPN security, strongly recommending software upgrades as the best line of defense.

History of Similar Vulnerabilities

This incident marks the second time in recent months that Cisco has addressed a zero-day vulnerability in its ASA and FTD software. Previously, in August, the company patched CVE-2026-20349, a similar flaw that allowed unauthorized remote reloads via the SSL VPN service. While the origins and perpetrators of these attacks remain unclear, the recurrence of such vulnerabilities highlights ongoing challenges in maintaining robust network security.

The cybersecurity community continues to keep a close watch on these developments, emphasizing the need for continuous vigilance and proactive measures in software security management.

As cyber threats evolve, organizations must prioritize timely updates and adopt comprehensive security strategies to protect their digital infrastructure against emerging vulnerabilities.
