AI Scheme Defrauds Companies of 9 Million, Three Charged

AI Scheme Defrauds Companies of $129 Million, Three Charged

Posted on November 6, 2026 By CWS

Three individuals have been indicted on charges of wire fraud and aggravated identity theft after allegedly using artificial intelligence to impersonate corporate leaders and lawyers, ultimately stealing approximately $129 million. The indictment, announced by prosecutors on Thursday, outlines a sophisticated scheme that spanned over eighteen months.

Details of the Fraudulent Operation

Jacob Soall, 41, Sharon Hazan, 54, and Guy Sheetrit, 42, are accused of targeting numerous businesses worldwide with their AI-driven scheme. According to court documents, their victims included hospital systems in Missouri and California, a bank in Rhode Island, a financial technology firm in the UK, a mutual fund company in Massachusetts, and a pet food company in Florida.

The accused, hailing from Spain, the UK, Israel, and the United Arab Emirates, also face charges of money laundering. As per the indictment filed in a U.S. District Court in New York, the trio orchestrated their plan by leveraging AI to mimic the voices and images of CEOs and attorneys, convincing employees to transfer large sums of money.

Global Reach and Methodology

The defendants reportedly used email and coordinated phone or video calls to deceive company employees, pretending to be CEOs needing assistance with confidential transactions. This involved impersonating attorneys to add legitimacy to their requests, instructing employees to wire significant payments to various international bank accounts.

Jacob Soall played a crucial role by impersonating attorneys from the UK, using a script titled ‘Lawyer Call’ to enhance his credibility during interactions with victims. The funds acquired were then converted into cryptocurrency to obscure their origins before being distributed among the perpetrators and their associates.

Legal Proceedings and Potential Sentences

The legal proceedings are ongoing, with the case details remaining sealed as of Thursday evening. The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York has yet to comment further on the matter. Arrests of the three suspects occurred between June and September, and if convicted, they face up to 20 years for most charges, while aggravated identity theft carries a two-year sentence.

FBI Assistant Director James C. Barnacle, Jr. emphasized the need for vigilance as technology advances, stating that the FBI is committed to adapting its capabilities to combat such criminal activities. This case highlights the increasing risks posed by AI in cybercrime, underscoring the need for enhanced security measures and awareness.

The fraudulent activities uncovered in this case serve as a stark reminder of the evolving nature of cyber threats and the importance of continuous adaptation in technological defenses.
