AI-Powered Hacker Steals Millions of Records in South Korea

AI-Powered Hacker Steals Millions of Records in South Korea

Posted on October 27, 2026 By CWS

South Korean authorities have apprehended a 32-year-old individual suspected of orchestrating a significant AI-driven hacking campaign. This operation allegedly targeted approximately 90 organizations, resulting in the theft of 8.2 million records comprising personal and internal data.

The targeted entities included a diverse range of institutions such as hospitals, private academies, golf courses, universities, and subsidiaries of major corporations. According to the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency’s announcement on October 26, the stolen data was used to extort victims for financial gain. The alleged mastermind, referred to as ‘A,’ was detained on October 15 and later handed over to prosecutors on October 23 while remaining in custody.

Hacking Techniques and AI Involvement

Investigations revealed that the hacking attempts commenced in September 2025 and continued until October 2026. Despite lacking formal IT education, the suspect reportedly acquired hacking skills through self-study online. His professional background includes a stint in penetration testing at a security firm from 2019 to 2022, providing him with practical expertise prior to engaging in illegal activities.

Initially employing conventional hacking methods to identify system vulnerabilities, the suspect started leveraging generative AI technologies extensively from late August 2026, thereby broadening his cyber operations. It is reported that AI tools were instrumental in breaching nearly 60 of the targeted organizations, although not all intrusions utilized AI from the start.

AI Tools and Extortion Strategy

The software identified in the operation was ARTEX, an AI penetration testing tool, which has also been linked to other attacks on South Korean financial institutions. However, the public information does not conclusively connect these separate campaigns to the same group of attackers.

After acquiring sensitive data, the group allegedly sent extortion emails to the affected entities, threatening to release the stolen information publicly, which could harm corporate reputations and lead to regulatory fines. Reports indicate that the extortion demands from 38 organizations amounted to 360 million won, though it remains unclear how much was actually paid.

Investigation and Broader Implications

The investigation was triggered by a complaint from a victim in June. Authorities tracked the activities through server logs and employed an internal AI system to scrutinize the evidence. As the investigation continues, efforts are being made to recover stolen data and determine if it has appeared on the dark web or facilitated further illegal activities.

This case is marked as South Korea’s first large-scale incident involving generative AI in hacking. The suspect’s prior experience in penetration testing is seen as a key factor in the success of this operation, rather than an indication of AI’s capabilities in inexperienced hands.

The incident has sparked wider concerns regarding cybersecurity breaches in South Korea, particularly in the financial sector, prompting ongoing evaluations of AI’s role in these attacks. For stakeholders, discerning verified breaches from claims of autonomous AI hacking is crucial for accurately assessing the cyber threat landscape.
