Brave’s Email Aliases Enhance Privacy in Browser Update

Brave’s Email Aliases Enhance Privacy in Browser Update

Posted on September 1, 2026 By CWS

Brave has launched a new feature in its desktop browser, version 1.94, aimed at enhancing user privacy. The new Email Aliases feature allows users to engage with websites without revealing their actual email addresses. This innovative tool creates unique email addresses that forward messages to a user’s primary inbox, keeping the actual address hidden from third parties.

Innovative Privacy Solution

The introduction of Email Aliases marks the 39th installment in Brave’s ongoing commitment to privacy updates. Developed by a team of Brave engineers, including Pavel Beloborodov and Tarik Demirović, this feature addresses the growing concern over the use of email addresses as personal identifiers. Unlike browser cookies, email addresses can be traced across various platforms and devices, making them valuable for advertisers and data brokers.

By using these aliases, companies are less able to link a user’s email to advertising profiles. For example, when a user purchases items online, their email address could be used by stores to connect with advertising platforms. Brave’s solution provides a unique address per site, minimizing exposure and protecting user identity.

A Seamless User Experience

Creating an email alias is straightforward. Users can generate an alias directly within any email field on a website, or through a right-click menu option labeled ‘New Email Alias’. This address forwards incoming emails to the primary address associated with the user’s Brave Account. If an alias starts receiving unwanted emails or becomes associated with unused services, it can be easily deactivated and replaced.

The management of these aliases is performed through Brave’s settings menu, specifically under Autofill & Passwords. Users need a Brave Account, which is distinct from Brave Premium accounts, to use this feature. The account system utilizes the OPAQUE protocol, ensuring passwords are never directly transmitted to Brave’s servers.

Future Developments and Security

Brave assures users that primary account addresses and aliases are stored encrypted, and email content is not accessed by the company. Instead, emails are processed for spam and malware before being forwarded, and are promptly deleted from Brave’s servers after delivery. Alias notes are stored locally, and with Brave Sync enabled, they are encrypted end-to-end.

Currently, users can create up to five free email aliases, with plans to expand this feature to mobile devices and introduce a Premium version. While some emails might initially land in spam folders as the service establishes its reputation, Brave remains committed to refining this feature and enhancing privacy.

The introduction of Email Aliases underlines Brave’s dedication to protecting digital identities in an increasingly connected world. As online privacy concerns grow, tools like these become essential for users seeking to safeguard their personal information.
