Coinbase Customer Data Exposed in Amplitude Security Incident

Coinbase Customer Data Exposed in Amplitude Security Incident

Posted on October 28, 2026 By CWS

In a recent development, Coinbase has reported that a security issue at its analytics vendor, Amplitude, has compromised contact information for a small segment of its users. The cryptocurrency platform has assured that there was no unauthorized entry into its own systems, and customer assets remain unaffected.

Impact on Coinbase and Other Clients

According to Coinbase’s official communication, the security lapse also impacted other clients utilizing Amplitude’s services. The company is actively informing affected users and relevant regulatory bodies, though it has not disclosed the identities of other involved businesses or detailed the mechanics of the exposure.

Coinbase emphasized that this event does not constitute a breach of its own infrastructure, highlighting the separation between its internal systems and those of external providers. This distinction is crucial as it underscores how third-party incidents can affect customer data without compromising the primary service’s security.

Details of the Exposed Data

The exact number of impacted Coinbase customers and the specifics of the exposed data fields have not been confirmed by the company. Although some reports suggest that email addresses and phone numbers were part of the breach, Coinbase’s statement only mentions customer contact information without specifying further.

Citing a security researcher from SlowMist, Cryptopolitan reported that over 70,000 users might have been affected. However, Coinbase has not verified these figures, nor has it disclosed any details regarding potential attackers, the method of intrusion, or the timeline of the incident.

Understanding the Broader Implications

This incident underscores the importance of managing third-party risks in data security. While analytics services like Amplitude offer valuable insights into user behavior, the security of customer information becomes a shared responsibility between the service provider and its partners.

It’s important to note that this incident is distinct from a previous data theft at Coinbase in May 2025, where attackers exploited overseas support staff to access customer data. There is no link between that event and the current Amplitude exposure.

While contact data alone does not provide direct access to cryptocurrency assets, it can potentially be used for phishing scams, making fraudulent communications more convincing. Coinbase advises users to verify communications through official channels and remain vigilant.

The primary concern now is the potential for follow-up fraud rather than a direct compromise of Coinbase’s systems. Affected individuals are urged to scrutinize any alerts they receive and be cautious of unsolicited communications. Further updates from Coinbase will be necessary to fully understand the extent and cause of the exposure.
