GhostMap Bug Triggers Endless Reboot on Android Devices

GhostMap Bug Triggers Endless Reboot on Android Devices

Posted on November 5, 2026 By CWS

A recently discovered Android vulnerability, dubbed GhostMap, can cause smartphones to enter a continuous reboot loop after the installation of a specially crafted application. This alarming flaw can activate without the user opening the app or granting any permissions.

Discovery and Analysis of GhostMap

The GhostMap bug was identified by researchers at Bitdefender Labs, who published their findings on November 5, 2026. Their investigation began on August 12, 2026, following the crash of test emulators by an APK collected from the wild. The APK, intended as a banking dropper, failed to execute, highlighting a flaw in Android rather than the malware itself.

The issue arose when the malware’s author used a packer to alter the app’s internal structure, inadvertently disrupting the part of Android responsible for reading apps during installation. This resulted in the phone’s system entering a crash loop.

Technical Insights into the Vulnerability

GhostMap exploits discrepancies between two Android libraries that interpret APK file sizes differently. While one library checks sizes only for stored entries, the other assumes any entry not marked as deflated is stored. This inconsistency allows an APK with an unusual method value to slip through unnoticed.

Consequently, Android maps the file into memory at an incorrect size, causing a SIGBUS fault when the system reads beyond the file’s true end. This issue particularly affects the system_server process, leading to repeated crashes shortly after installation.

Potential Exploits and Precautions

Bitdefender noted several potential malicious uses for the GhostMap flaw. For instance, a rogue app could immobilize a phone and demand a ransom. Additionally, altering the app’s icon could cause the launcher and Settings to crash, preventing its removal.

The flaw, which affects Android versions starting from 10, does not execute code, steal data, or elevate permissions. However, it can crash processes, posing significant challenges for security scanners and users alike. Bitdefender reported the issue to Google, but a resolution remains pending as of now.

Conclusion and Recommendations

Until a fix is issued, Android users are advised to download apps only from reputable sources and avoid sideloaded APKs. Enabling USB debugging might assist in recovery, though it introduces its own risks. As Android continues to face similar vulnerabilities, vigilance remains crucial for device security.
