Indian Bank has released a critical cybersecurity warning, urging customers to be wary of a surge in fraudulent messages related to LPG payments and KYC updates. These scams are designed to steal banking information and compromise accounts.
Beware of Fraudulent Messages
Cybercriminals are exploiting public concerns over LPG availability by distributing deceptive messages via SMS, WhatsApp, and other platforms. These messages masquerade as official communications from major LPG suppliers like Indane, Bharat Gas, and HP Gas, falsely claiming that gas services will be suspended without immediate KYC updates or payment clearances.
Understanding the Scamming Techniques
The fraudsters employ sophisticated social engineering tactics by sending alarming notifications such as “Your LPG KYC is pending. Limited stock. Click here to update and order,” or “Immediate payment required to continue connection. Avoid LPG disconnection.” These messages are crafted to create a sense of urgency and bypass logical decision-making.
Once users click the links, they are redirected to realistic-looking but fake websites that capture their banking credentials, UPI PINs, and OTPs. In more advanced scams, malicious APK files are distributed via WhatsApp, granting attackers access to victims’ devices, exposing stored data and banking apps.
Protecting Yourself Against Scams
Indian authorities, including Delhi Police’s cybercrime units, have received numerous complaints through the national cybercrime helpline 1930 about these fraudulent LPG messages. Scammers also use fake social media ads with legitimate-looking gas company logos to lure consumers into providing financial information on counterfeit platforms.
Security experts identify this as a classic phishing campaign driven by the fear of LPG shortages to increase victim engagement.
Safety Measures and Recommendations
Indian Bank emphasizes the importance of cybersecurity through initiatives like IndSmart and “Khabar Nahi, Khabardar Bano,” advising customers to adhere to the following safety measures: never click on unsolicited links; refrain from sharing OTPs, UPI PINs, or Aadhaar numbers; verify KYC requirements through official LPG provider channels; avoid installing APKs from unknown sources; and report suspicious activities to the cybercrime helpline.
Legitimate LPG providers or banks will not request personal information or payments through unsolicited links. For any doubts, customers should contact their gas agency directly using the official contact information.
