Microsoft Ends Unwanted Ads in Windows 11

Microsoft Ends Unwanted Ads in Windows 11

Posted on July 24, 2026 By CWS

Microsoft has taken swift action to prevent unwanted antivirus advertisements in Windows 11 after users found that connecting certain LG monitors could lead to the installation of companion software and the appearance of a McAfee trial pop-up.

The problem came to light when owners of high-end LG monitors reported that connecting their displays prompted Windows Update to install the LG Monitor App Installer. This installation, through the Microsoft Store, resulted in an unexpected McAfee trial advertisement, even for users who had never expressed interest in antivirus software.

Removing Unwanted Software Ads

The issue was particularly concerning to users who had purchased expensive monitors, expecting a seamless experience without third-party security ads. The app, intended to assist with monitor controls, had no legitimate reason to promote antivirus software through an OS-driven installation path, drawing widespread criticism online.

The situation escalated when Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney brought the issue to the attention of Windows chief Pavan Davuluri on social media. This public spotlight prompted a prompt response from Microsoft’s Windows leadership.

Microsoft’s Swift Response

Within days, Pavan Davuluri announced an official update, thanking users for highlighting the issue. He confirmed that Microsoft had collaborated with LG, leading to a decision to disable the McAfee pop-up from their app immediately. This cooperation aimed to enhance user experience for customers of both companies.

This incident underscores a persistent challenge within the Windows ecosystem: peripheral companion apps that can introduce unwanted prompts, trialware, and ads via Windows Update or the Microsoft Store. Despite efforts to keep the core OS clean, partner software can sometimes undermine the user experience.

Implications for Users and Partners

Microsoft’s public statement highlighted two key points: first, that bloatware-style ads are incompatible with the Windows 11 user experience, and second, that the company is willing to pressure ecosystem partners, like LG, to change problematic behaviors.

While LG’s agreement to disable the McAfee pop-up is an immediate step, further changes to the LG Monitor App’s distribution or permissions could follow. However, for now, the ad surface has been closed.

Users connecting certain LG monitors may still encounter the LG Monitor App Installer through Windows Update, but the McAfee trial pop-up is now being disabled at the app level. Users who have already installed the app can check for updates in the Microsoft Store or remove the software if unnecessary.

This incident illustrates how peripheral drivers and companion apps continue to be a vector for unwanted software in Windows 11. Microsoft’s quick action and resolution send a clear message to other hardware partners: silent installations and third-party ads will be scrutinized and addressed when they harm the customer experience.

For Windows 11 users, the message from Microsoft is clear: there is no tolerance for such bloatware advertising, and the company is prepared to intervene when partners overstep boundaries.
