OVHcloud GitHub Compromise: Malware Threatens User Secrets

OVHcloud GitHub Compromise: Malware Threatens User Secrets

Posted on October 20, 2026 By CWS

OVHcloud’s GitHub account fell victim to a sophisticated attack, where hackers infiltrated the platform to disseminate malware through the company’s official command-line tool releases. This breach, detected on October 19, 2026, specifically targeted users downloading the OVHcloud CLI, with the malware designed to exfiltrate sensitive information stored on their systems.

Details of the OVHcloud Breach

The supply chain attack was swiftly identified when a vigilant customer noticed suspicious alterations in the release files, prompting an immediate response from OVHcloud. The malicious files were taken down within 94 minutes of detection. According to OVHcloud CEO Octave Klaba, the releases v0.11.0 through v0.15.0 were affected, while v0.10.0 remained untouched. A new, secure version, v0.16.0, has been made available, marked as immutable to prevent future tampering.

How the Attack Unfolded

The breach was executed by exploiting an existing developer account, allowing the attackers to insert a harmful binary into the software hosted on GitHub. This tactic effectively placed the malware within a trusted download source, making it difficult for users to suspect foul play. The exact method of the account compromise has not been disclosed by OVHcloud.

A customer report highlighted concerns about the integrity of the release files, indicating that they had been replaced with a compromised build. This issue was publicly documented as issue #300, covering affected versions from v0.13.0 to v0.15.0. The lack of a private vulnerability reporting channel led to the report being openly accessible.

Implications and Recommendations

The malware’s primary function was to extract secrets from local storage, posing a significant risk given the CLI tool’s role in managing vital cloud services and credentials. While OVHcloud has not detailed the specific data targeted, users are advised to update the CLI tool without delay and replace any potentially compromised secrets.

Organizations should conduct thorough investigations to determine the extent of exposure, focusing on devices that downloaded the affected files and scrutinizing account activity for any anomalies. It is crucial to manage not only OVHcloud-specific credentials but also any other sensitive information accessible on the affected machines.

Conclusion and Future Outlook

This incident underscores the vulnerabilities inherent in software supply chains, where trusted updates can become vectors for credential theft. OVHcloud’s prompt response and ongoing investigation aim to mitigate the damage and prevent future occurrences. Users are encouraged to remain vigilant and adhere to best practices in cybersecurity to protect their data.
