Microsoft Releases Urgent Windows 11 Update for Account Sign-In Bug

Microsoft Releases Urgent Windows 11 Update for Account Sign-In Bug

Posted on March 23, 2026 By CWS

Microsoft has released an urgent update for Windows 11, addressing a critical sign-in issue caused by the March 2026 Patch Tuesday updates. The update, identified as KB5085516, targets Windows 11 versions 25H2 and 24H2 and seeks to resolve difficulties users faced when trying to log into applications using their Microsoft accounts.

Background on the Issue

The problem emerged after the cumulative update KB5079473 was deployed on March 10, 2026. Affected users encountered a misleading “no Internet” error during sign-in, preventing access to services such as Microsoft Teams Free and OneDrive, despite having a functional internet connection. Although this issue predominantly affects individual users and small businesses relying on personal accounts, organizations using Microsoft Entra ID for authentication are not impacted.

Details of the Emergency Update

Issued on March 21, 2026, this out-of-band release includes comprehensive fixes from previous updates along with the necessary sign-in solution. Furthermore, it introduces updated AI components, signaling Microsoft’s ongoing efforts to embed AI features within Windows 11. These components, including Image Search and Semantic Analysis, have been upgraded to version 1.2602.1451.0, enhancing the operating system’s intelligent capabilities.

Deployment and Implementation

The update is being automatically delivered to devices that installed KB5079473, provided they have the “Get the latest updates as soon as they’re available” setting enabled. Users can also manually install the update via Settings > Windows Update. Additionally, for enterprise setups managed through Microsoft Intune or Windows Autopatch, Microsoft has issued specific guidance to expedite the deployment process without affecting regular maintenance schedules.

Alongside the cumulative update, a servicing stack update (SSU) identified as KB5083532 has been released for Windows 11 version 24H2. This component ensures the stability and reliability of the update process, especially crucial during out-of-band updates.

As of now, Microsoft has reported no known issues with the application of KB5085516. This development highlights the company’s commitment to swiftly addressing operational disruptions to maintain user productivity and security.
