Advantest Reveals Data Breach Following Ransomware Attack

Advantest Reveals Data Breach Following Ransomware Attack

Posted on October 7, 2026 By CWS

Japanese semiconductor testing company Advantest has revealed that hackers accessed personal data during a ransomware attack disclosed earlier this year. This breach, originally reported in February 2026, involved the unauthorized accessing of Advantest’s network, impacting its operations significantly.

Details of the Ransomware Attack

In an initial announcement in February, Advantest, a supplier of automated testing equipment for major chip manufacturers like Intel and Samsung, acknowledged that its network had been compromised by ransomware. However, at that time, the extent of data extraction was still under investigation.

Recent notifications from Advantest confirm that personally identifiable information (PII) was indeed stolen. This includes sensitive data such as names, birth dates, contact details, Social Security numbers, and even passport and driver’s license information. Additionally, medical and financial records were also compromised.

Impact and Response

While Advantest has reassured that there is no evidence to suggest the public disclosure or misuse of the stolen PII, it has acknowledged the increased risk of identity theft for those affected. In compliance with legal obligations, the company has notified impacted individuals and relevant authorities of the breach.

According to filings with the California Attorney General’s Office, over 500 residents of California are among those affected. Notifications have also been filed in Massachusetts and Vermont, where 14 and 8 individuals, respectively, have been identified as victims of the breach.

Ongoing Investigations and Related Incidents

Currently, no ransomware group has claimed responsibility for the attack on Advantest. This incident adds to a growing list of cyberattacks targeting major organizations globally. Similar breaches have been reported by other entities, affecting millions of individuals and highlighting the escalating threat of cybercrime.

As investigations continue, Advantest is likely taking steps to enhance its cybersecurity measures to prevent future breaches. The company’s response and transparency in handling this situation will be crucial in maintaining trust with its clients and partners.

Moving forward, affected individuals are advised to remain vigilant against potential identity theft and fraud attempts. This incident underscores the importance of robust cybersecurity frameworks in protecting sensitive data against increasingly sophisticated cyber threats.
