Apple Enhances Device Security Against DarkSword Exploit

Apple Enhances Device Security Against DarkSword Exploit

Posted on April 2, 2026 By CWS

Apple has announced the expansion of its security measures by rolling out updates for older iOS and iPadOS devices to shield them from the DarkSword exploit kit. This proactive approach aims to safeguard users from potential threats posed by this newly revealed vulnerability.

Background on the DarkSword Vulnerability

The DarkSword exploit kit surfaced shortly after the Coruna exploit, causing significant concern among security experts. Prominent cybersecurity firms like iVerify, Google, and Lookout have highlighted the dangers associated with DarkSword, particularly its capability to exploit multiple iOS vulnerabilities with minimal user interaction.

DarkSword shares infrastructure with Coruna, targeting six key iOS weaknesses. This exploit has been actively used by malicious actors, including state-sponsored groups and commercial surveillance vendors. Notably, two Russian nation-state groups have reportedly leveraged DarkSword in their cyberattacks.

Apple’s Response and Update Deployment

In response to these threats, Apple had already released patches for the vulnerabilities targeted by DarkSword back in 2025. Users of the latest iOS versions have enjoyed protection for several months. However, with the emergence of DarkSword, it was estimated that approximately 200 million devices running iOS versions between 18.4 and 18.6.2 were still susceptible.

On April 1, 2026, Apple extended the availability of iOS version 18.7.7, which includes vital DarkSword patches, to a wider range of devices. This ensures that users with Automatic Updates activated can receive essential security enhancements to protect against web-based attacks linked to DarkSword.

Details of the Latest Security Update

The iOS and iPadOS 18.7.7 updates address over two dozen security flaws, potentially exploited to compromise devices. These include vulnerabilities related to kernel code execution, keychain access, activation lock bypass, and web browsing security.

The updates are now applicable to a variety of iPhones, including models like XR, XS, XS Max, 11, SE (2nd and 3rd generation), 12, 13, 15, 16, and 16e. Supported iPad models span the 5th Gen mini (A17 Pro), 7th Gen (A16), Air (3rd–5th Gen & 11″/13″ M2–M3), and Pro (11″ 1st Gen–M4 & 12.9″/13″ 3rd Gen–M4).

Looking Ahead

Apple’s swift action in expanding security updates reflects its commitment to user safety and device integrity. As cyber threats evolve, it is imperative for users to maintain updated systems to ward off potential vulnerabilities. By ensuring that devices are equipped with the latest patches, users can enjoy enhanced protection against sophisticated cyber threats like DarkSword.
